I am a foodie and have been for many years. The first and foremost thing I look for in a location is the local food and restaurants. Having moved to Luxembourg, I found that such information is a little lagging, especially for a smaller community like Esch-sur-Alzette. So, I’ve made it my mission to visit as many restaurants as possible, including the local joints. Esch being a smaller family-oriented community has many hidden gems within the small lanes and streets. Though the big name brands such as Fischer exist, it is when you talk to the locals that one finds small family-owned ventures like the local Portuguese BBQ place down on rue de Belvaux.
What may appear shabby to foreigners, is one of the best places in Esch to get great grilled meat. Food is a culture in and of itself that brings people together beyond language barriers. When I moved to Luxembourg, I did not speak any French, German or Luxembourgish, but I spoke the language of food. It is so easy to get some one to speak about foods they like, and the surrounding nostalgia, bringing back memories and sharing stories. Everywhere I meet people, I realise that food is a universal binder, and so I love to share about the places where can learn about food cultures. So, I love to share about places to eat, hours when they are open or closed, and most importantly the price. If the food is great, no amount of money can suffice, but then when it is poor, one loses faith in restaurants. I have no stake in restaurants, but I have a stake in improving the quality of life for the locals and the tourists. It is how we communicate and share the joys and memories of one’s culture and history. So, long story short, I love sharing about food as local guide.
