Best bars in Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne city has a fantastic culture of quirky lounges and hidden bars. This list is just a few of my favourite sneaky places for a drink, with a few of the most impressive popular places as well. I’ll continue to update this list

1. Eau De Vie

Down a small lane off Exhibition street, hidden behind a bland wooden door is a very upscale cocktail bar. Everytime I visit all the patrons are dressed to the nine’s, even the staff are well dressed, and the menus are of such a high quality the barman once told me they have to order 1000 new ones every year because so many are stolen.

I would highly recommend first time visitors to sit at the bar and order the flaming whisky cocktail.

2. Pizza Pizza Pizza

Not only does the entrance serve possibly the best pizza by the slice in Melbourne, but past the small stoves and through the door at the back and you’ll find a delightful little bar. In peak times there’s not always an available seat, but even just stopping in for a quick drink makes you feel like some part of club, only those who want more than pizza are allowed in.

3. Bar Americano

Down the back of an alleyway, the entrance looks like a little serving hole in the wall. The bar and staff are presented as 1930s style speakeasy, with drinks to match. I had a lovely conversation with a bartender about the history of the bar, and also discovered that I don’t like Negroni.

4. Beneath Driver Lane

Not quite as hidden as some others on this list, nevertheless it’s off the beaten track and provides just as much excitement as you walk down the narrow staircase into the candlelit basement. Bohemian vibes, with concrete columns splitting the main seating area, an intimate stage area, and booths along the wall. Food selection is also excellent, if expensive.

5. Boilermaker House

Not a hidden bar, but an impressive retro bar and grill. The live music is often Jazz or similar, which adds to the white tiles and curtained boothed 1940s vibe. The whisky selection is second to none, with the bartenders knowing all the best pairings, and putting on a show when you order.

It would be nice if it wasn’t quite so busy, but that’s the price of the quality and attention to detail. Get there early for a seat
