Bersih Desa (Clean Village), Mystical Rituals

Every year in the month of Suro (Javanese calendar) a village clean-up event is held in my village. This event features several rituals.

What is always there is cone. Tumpeng is food that is arranged high like a cone. Like a mountain.

Usually rice and complement. Such as grilled chicken, dried tempe, fried potato chili sauce, urap-urap, etc.

But now the cone can be in the form of market snacks, fruits, produce and vegetables that are arranged beautifully such as works of art.

This Tumpeng was paraded around the village. Followed by participants who wore colorful costumes and flashmobed beautiful traditional dances in turn.

There are also extreme appearances, for example silat and reog. The dancer will wear a dadak merak, a high mask made of peacock feathers with a wooden frame. Wear it by being bitten.

It seems impossible because of the weight. But that’s the truth. You can watch this parade in my village every month Suro. Please come next year.

Hello dear** @Moestika **thanks a lot for sharing your amazing experience about Bersih Desa festival which looks so colourful and magnificent, especially the costumes of the participants. It’s looking a fun and frolic festival, In India we have some other kinds of festival such as: Ganesh Chaturthi (a festival related to Lord Ganesha), Durga Pooja (related to goddess Durga) so during these festivals we also arrange various events like this.

Some suggestions:

  • Kindly attach a video related to this festival if possible because by video it’ll be more attractive
  • You also used some local names of fruits and vegetables, kindly write the English translations of the associated terms by using the brackets ( ) because we have local guides from different countries so for easy approach you can edit your post.

And can you tell me in which month you celebrate it?

Is there any relation of Bersih Desa with Islamic Calendar ?

Hi @JaneBurunina … Suro is the month of the Javanese calendar in Indonesia. Is the beginning of the year. For 2019 to coincide with August 31. During a month a lot of activities carried out. One of them is the Bersih Desa. The goal is to clean the village to avoid disaster. Making a cone is a mandatory activity, the first picture is a rice cone and its complement. Presented in a banana leaf bamboo container. Which is like the gate is a tumpeng jajan pasar, snacks that can be obtained at traditional markets. Which is like a cone is a fruit cone, consisting of oranges, apples, guava, tomatoes, watermelons, pineapple, bananas etc. And next to it the vegetable cone, there are mustard greens, cabbage, carrots, long beans, celery, leeks, eggplants, etc. All will be paraded around the village and end up in the field to pray together. So that all avoid disaster. After that the food was fought over. Falling & dirty food is still taken. Not to be eaten, but made fertilizer for plants. Because we believe that food contains prayer, and we don’t want it to be in vain.

Thanks Jane

Hay @IshantHP_ig Thank you for the advice. Actually what I mean by Javanese is the island of Jawa (Java) in Indonesia. Not Japanese. I participated in the parade, so I can’t make videos. I only made photos with a cellphone camera. You’re right, if there is a video it will be more interesting. I love Indian culture, I hope one day you will share it with us.

Hi @Moestika , proud of you, sis. In this disruption era, you still maintain our culture of Bersih Desa. In which village do you live, and in which part of Java?

I live in Yogya, nearby my house, there is also Bersih Desa, and they dance and also make a rice cone like yours. We have to maintain the rich of our culture like this.

Thank you for sharing with us,
