Last year, a visit to the dam near Khajuraho in March revealed both promise and neglect. Located just 6 km from Khajuraho and built on the Khudar river, this dam was intended to irrigate surrounding villages and sustain their agriculture. With an impressive spread of nearly 8 square kilometers, its strong barrage highlights the ambition behind its construction.

A large sum was invested by the government to create a vibrant children’s park and picnic area below the barrage, complete with facilities and a vintage rail engine for added charm. Regrettably, today this park is mostly deserted and facilities are in disrepair, reflecting poor upkeep despite significant expenditure.

Water scarcity during monsoons has left the reservoir low, resulting in fewer visiting tourists and diminished recreational appeal for families. Early mornings, however, still attract birdwatchers, as the setting remains naturally beautiful and offers tranquil moments in the midst of agricultural activity and local fishing.

The dam’s continued neglect by authorities is disappointing given its potential as a major community space. After exploring Khajuraho’s monuments, this area still provides a peaceful spot for recreation, sunsets, and reflection on the critical connection between water, agriculture, and civilization.
