BBC: World Record Holder for Largest Temperature Range

Interesting. I wonder if we have LocalGuides from Verkhoyansk!

http://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-41914876

Verkhoyansk fights over the title of the coldest village in the world with Oymyakon, an area to the south-east of the town.

However, it holds the Guinness World Record for the greatest temperature range on Earth, from -67.8C in winter to 37.3C in summer.

Temperatures are so low that some details of daily life take another dimension here:

  • batteries last only a few minutes
  • pen ink freezes before writing
  • it becomes dangerous to wear metal glasses

The locals also let their cars run all day, afraid they might not restart until spring.

But now, we need to melt the ice to have drinking water.

I am curious to know if they just melt it or need to boil it.

I cannot imagine how long it will take to make the ice drinkable, @OSAMA . What if I am really thirsty?

Hi @RonneBD ,

This is another BBC report in 2010 regarding Oymyakon - the coldest place in the world

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-11875131

That might give you some idea why people are living at such cold places.

I can’t imagine myself living there. At 10C I am already feeling freezing. We should make 1 LG trip there in Winter… From the satellite view, they have a large thriving town there. How do people live like that?

@OSAMA ,when you read the BBC article, did you notice they put a ā€˜Hottest Place’ side note? In Winter, it is 34oC only. I am sure it is warm enough for a Winter.

Hey @YK1001 ,
I read both the articles. It was really surprising to me. Both the towns are one hell of a place to visit.
But, living there is really something not to be taken lightly.
Best,
Avinash
