Barodol Mela in Krishnagar

Today I want to share about the the Barodol Mela at Krishnagar, Nadia, in West Bengal, in India.The “Mela” actually means ‘Fair’.Barodol is the name of this Fair.You can it say Barodol Fair.In bengali word we call it বারদোল মেলা(Barodol Mela).

Now let me tell what is Fair or Mela.Fair or Mela is a festival.It is a very famous festival which is held in our West Bengal.The Mela is a festival of gathering or meeting.There is a place where lots of people gather together.The place is full of various types of stalls and rides.The stalls are foods, clothes,toys etc.The people enjoy to this place one another.

Barodol Mela is a traditional and old Fair in Krishnagar.King Krishna Chandra, the King of Krishnagar, first started this fair.This fair is held every year since the time of King Krishna Chandra.The King’s palace still exists in Krishnanagar.The palace of the King Krishna Chandra is tradition in our Krishnagar city.None of the descendants of the King lives here but the palace is existed as a tradition.The fair is held at the ground of this palace which is called Barodol Mela Ground.

The festival is celebrated for one month.According to the Bengali calendar, the fair is held on the second 'Ekadashi Tithi’ (একাদশী তিথি) after ‘Dol Purnima’ (দোল পূর্ণিমা) festival in every year.According to English calender,this year 2023, the fair has started on 1st April.

First three days, Bengali God Krishna is worshipped there.Lord Krishna is worshipped there as the name of Gopal, Gopinath and Radha Krishna.On the first day, Krishna is dressed as a King.Lord Krishna is worn many ornaments.On the second day, Krishna is dressed up with flowers.Lord Krishna is worn various flower ornaments.On the third day, Krishna is dressed up as a cowherd.Every year Krishna is dressed up according to this custom.Only for three days, God Krishna is worshipped by the priest.The people can visit the worshipping of God for three.The remaining 27 days people come to visit the fair.

During the three days when the God is worshipped, many saints, monks and beggars come here from far and wide.For three days they stay here and beg.Visitors bring rice and wheat from home and give it to the beggars as alms.Some people dress up like a clown there.Visitors are happy to see them and give some money to them. on the third day a special food is distributed to the visitors.The special dish is called ‘Khichuri’(খিচুরি).Khichuri is a very famous and traditional dish in our Bengal.All visitors get this special dish for free of cost.They eat the food with great satisfaction.

People come from different places to visit the fair.The people with their family, friends relatives, kids come to this fair form far and wide and they enjoy together very much.In this fair, there are various stalls like clothes, various foods, toys, handcrafts, furniture (Sofa,TV, Air-condition,cooler,Fan,Bed, Wardrobe, Dressing table etc) all types of needy furniture, Bike, Tractor, Shoes, Many varaities of ornaments,make up for women, Kitchenware, Books etc.There you can get various things for home decoration like flowers, showpiece, colouring lights etc besides many other things.There are many restaurants.Ice cream stalls,Fast food stalls.There are various types of rides.There some rides for specially kids.There are many fun rides for adults.There are held circus show.There are many fun games in the circus show.The people enjoy watching that games and the games are really fun.There are also some selfie zone.The whole ground decorated very beautifully.The place is full of stalls and visitors.

People have different stories about this fair.Different people have different opinion as to why King Krishna Chandra initiated this fair.I don’t know the exact story behind of this fair.But I know that in earlier times, this fair was a little way for people to free from their busy and boring everyday life for one month.This is the place where people can collect all the essentials of their daily life.

For one month, all people enjoy there very much together.The place is best for leisure for one month.People leave the busy day life and spend time with each other and enjoy together for one month.This is a time of great joy for the whole citizen of Krishnanagar.The whole citizen of Krishnanagar wait for this time throughout the year.

Grazie per avermi condotta qui a leggere questo post @Tandrima2 Chi mi conosce sa che adoro leggere i racconti delle tradizioni degli altri Paesi. Questa fiera ha molti significati esemplari tra cui la donazione ai più bisognosi. Mi piace il fatto che i doni più preziosi siano riso e grano, questo per chi è in povertà rappresenta la vita, anche se nei paesi occidentali si fa in modi diversi, la donazione di cibo è sempre il miglior aiuto che si possa dare ai più poveri. Tra le foto mi sembra di riconoscere una statua di Madre Teresa di Calcutta è giusto? Scusa ma dal cellulare non riesco ad ingrandire le foto. Quello che amo delle vostre feste sono i colori e dalle tue foto vedo che questa fiera è molto colorata, potrei impazzire ad una fiera così colorata, non saprei dove guardare! :smile:

Qui da noi la fiera più lunga dura una settimana e nella serata finale ci sono quasi sempre i fuochi d’artificio.

Hi @Tandrima2 what an amazing story you have captured. This is real life I love visiting such fair. I stay in Mumbai even here around there is always a mela ( fun fair - or just a fair) helds round a year.

It’s really fun family visit on weekends and there are so many things you can explore in fair.

It’s a mixture of everything at one place.
