Baccaurea motleyana

The Bengali name is Latkan. Latkan or Natkona (scientific name Baccaurea motleyana) is a type of sour sweet fruit. Latkan is known by various names, such as Rambai, Rambi, Mafai-farang, Lamkhae, Ra mai etc. The size of the fruit is two to five cm, which is held in bunches. The color of the fruit is yellow. As a result, there are 2-5 seeds, the seeds have a juicy edible part attached to them, which has a sour or sour sweet taste depending on the variety. These fruits are eaten directly or made into jams.
Although the tree grows as a wild tree in South Asia, it is cultivated commercially in Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand.

At present it is being cultivated in certain places of Bangladesh such as Narsingdi, Sylhet, Gazipur and Netrokona districts. Among them, Shibpur, Raipura and Belab upazilas of Narsingdi district are cultivating the most Latkan.

The taste of Narsingdi’s Latkan is very high and there is a huge demand for it all over the country.

From May to July, like me, come to Kamartek village in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi district to observe or enjoy with your own eyes.
These fruits are available for purchase in all districts of Bangladesh from May to July
