Autism-Friendly Places: Florida

Over a period of ten years, more than 100% increase had been noticed in the number of children on ASD.
Autism Spectrum Disorders include social, communication, & behavioral challenges. These challenges & problems can either be mild, severe or somewhere in between.

For the families with kids/adults on the Autism Spectrum, planning a vacay per se can be exhausting let alone enjoying it troublefree. Loud noise, & Bright colors can be tough to deal with. Like most of you, I was fairly unaware of venues meant for families struggling with these disorders. As a matter of fact, I was at my utmost ignorance when it comes to this very common social disorder. Thus, upon searching, I became familiar with some such places worth the visit for families struggling with ASD.

Having said that, many people at large are still oblivious of such parks, places, resorts & programs’ availability. For the most part, these spots offer low light, low sound setting, sensory toys, no waiting time in lines, sensory guides, exhibits, and quiet rooms.
I became aware of these Venues being Sensory friendly inadvertently while I was making a list on maps the other day.
Along with accessibility signs, this one sign that grabbed my attention turned out an autism-friendly symbol.

This symbol(Puzzle like) represents the particular place event or performance being sensory friendly & specifically outlined for the children grappling with ASD.

Glazer Children’s Museum- Located in the heart of Downtown Tampa, This children’s museum has multiple exhibits & fascinating rooms. Tons of educational exhibits/Rooms in this museum meant for the toddlers/kids up to 12 years old.
Sunshine Sunday every month offers a low light low sound ambiance exclusively for children with special needs.
According to my observation- every state in the USA has at least one children’s museum, & some states have more than one, no matter which state you’re currently residing, you can visit the museum at a reasonable price, certain dates provide free entry too, check their website for the upcoming events. List of Children’s Museums in the States.

Sea-World Orlando/Aquatica Orlando- With over 40,000 Google reviews Sea World Orlando is a global fame marine zoological theme park, located in Orange County, Orlando.
Aquatica, one of the newest parks in the sea world, is now Certified Autism Center. Their staff is fully trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview.
Quiet Rooms & low sensory area specifically designed for the comfort of Autistic kids.

Zoo Miami- Located in Miami-dade county Zoo Miami is an abode for around 3k animals. Zoo Miami has recently earned the Certified Autism Center designation by IBCCES for being one of the organizations who has undergone specialized training in order to provide better service to people with Autism & Sensory needs.
They are also working on to provide Sensory Bags including noise cancellation headphones, fidget toy & stress balls to make the experience better for guests with disabilities, later this year.

New World Center Miami- New World Symphony Miami believes that Music has a healing & soothing power,
New world center is a safe, sensory friendly setting for the whole family. Both children & grownups with SPD & ASD are welcome here, the accommodation provides Reduced Volumes, Noise canceling headphones, Low lighting, inflatables, Bungees, quiet rooms, & painting stations.
Most of all, the entry here is free.

TradeWinds Island Grand Resort- Is a great place to be for people searching for a hassle-free family vacation. This beachfront resort, located at St. Pete Beach, Florida, provides safe & friendly accommodation for families with special needs. With a trained staff to comprehend such situations & sensitivities, this resort won’t disappoint for they render Safety Kits including Door Alarms, Corner Guards, and things like temporary but write-able safety Tattoos for kids.
On top of all this, kids club, special needs friendly activities, Gluten Free food options available.

PS- This list on Google Maps consists of before-mentioned venues in Florida. For information on more autism-friendly, sensory friendly places outside Florida, I am currently working on a list encompassing such places in the entire USA & will be sharing it with you shortly.

I ever been with autism before. It s obviously that parents who take care of their children with autism are not easy to handle them because lack of focus in anything. Parents try to find the good place for them but they have limitation in finding and finally they will keep their children to enjoy in their house or repeated place that they ever took children to join without any issues. It s great idea if we can put this symbol in Google map to be guidance for autism.

@ReemaGandhi this is an absolutely enlightening post and I truly think your list is one of a kind - what a great idea and a great cause to help others who may be seeking places like these on Maps. I don’t think I’ve ever even payed attention to looking out for that sign of sensory-friendly places before. Incredible effort!

@duenbenz Adding a symbol for venues being sensory friendly on Google Maps seems to be a potential idea. It would undeniably guide people visiting a certain place having Autism-friendly elements & attributes.

However, when you mentioned -”I ever been with autism before”, what did you mean?

Don’t want to misinterpret your words so asking for clarification.

Thank you @SP31 for taking out time to read this post. I appreciate it.

You won’t believe it’s only recently while I was in the process of making this list, that I began to notice how sensory friendly or accessible a public setting can be.

I can only imagine how so perplexing it must be for such families to somehow find a place that meets their expectations.

The only purpose I had when coming up with a list like this, was to help people struggling with Autism per se.

@ReemaGandhi my brother, he ever lived with family who handled their 2 autistic kids while he was going abroad for vacation. Once they came to Thailand to visit my brother, I met them all with those little 2 kids. I found that it s not easy to make them focus or listen to you. They are like they have short concentration and unable to understand what we try to deliver them easily. Sometimes it s like their consciousness is not staying with them. They didnt eat but threw away food instead. Moreover, they cant structure the sentence to talk properly. In my view, community can help them improve by building good environment for them to make them gradually adjust and learn how to get along well with others. My friend’s sister, she is down syndrome , DS or DNS, but she learns how to participate well with others. My friend’s family always opens for her to join many activities as her ability can. Never been shy to take her out to expand her world and encourage her to talk with new friends. We can help them better place by understanding them.

Highly appreciate your words @duenbenz

It seems you’ve closely observed the children & their families suffering from issues like lack of Concentration & communication problems.

With our actions, we can definitely contribute towards such social issues & I genuinely hope it help the families not to mention the children with Autism/Down Syndrome.

@ReemaGandhi and what better time to share a great list like this and your efforts to create it than World Autism Month and today as it is World Autism Awareness Day. Many kudos!

@SP31 Couldn’t be any happier that you acknowledged it, Coz while I was in the process of researching, basically obtaining knowledge on the subject, there was a contingency whether or not I’d pass this very day, But fortunately, I was able to gather enough information for my article & could post it a day before the Autism Awareness Day!

Well such places and information is great parents to deal and care for kids with autism. We need to start kind of campaign to mark the places with reviews and tag the features which is most inspiring and attraction for special kids and persons. Like all places in this post, should be reviewed with tags #AutismFriendly

Using such Hashtags is a wonderful suggestion @SpecialGuide , I must appreciate you for that.

For the most part, I’m taking an initiative to help such families either through Google Maps by creating lists or otherwise, I’m already editing my reviews to add if a particular place is Sensory-Friendly!

Do tag other Local Guides(as they might be intrested) in this post so they know about this initiative & we’d together work on it accordingly.

I’d also like to request the same to my fellow Guides @SP31 & @duenbenz

Lets Start this initiative by letting more people know about it, or at the very least creating an awareness about it.

Share your opinions/Suggestions on it.
