During my visit to Atharobari, Ishwarganj, I explored the historic Atharobari Jamidar House—an estate that once welcomed the legendary Rabindranath Tagore. This 250-year-old zamindar residence still carries the essence of its glorious past, even though most of the structures now stand in ruins.
Tagore’s arrival here remains the most remarkable chapter in the estate’s history. He was warmly received with cultural festivities and honored with a golden key to inaugurate a newly built kachari house. The stories of that celebration still resonate among the locals.
Today, part of the property is used by Atharobari Degree College, while the surviving structures—like the iconic lion gate and old natmandir—are slowly being claimed by nature and time. Once spread over 101 acres, the estate has lost much of its land after the end of the zamindari era.
Even in its neglected state, the Atharobari Zamindar House stands as an important reminder of Bengal’s cultural and historical heritage. Visiting this place felt like stepping back into a forgotten chapter of history—one that deserves preservation before it disappears completely.
