ATAL TUNNEL ( ROHTANG PASS)

Atal tunnel is also known as Rohtang tunnel. its a highway tunnel built under the rohtang pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas on the Leh -Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh.

The length of this tunnel is 9.02 km, it is the longest highway single tube tunnel above 10,000 feet in the world at is name after former Prime minister of India , Atal bihari vajpayee.

The work of the tunnel had began in 2010 and took 10 years to complete the opening of the tunnel was done om 3rd Oct 2020.

This tunnel has reduce a lot travel time between Manali to leh, kaylong and many other places. If we talk about the previous route before the tunnel was made it was 116 km long and nearly takes 6 hours.

The tunnel is made with double lane with 1 m footpath on both side and the speed limit is 40 to 60 they have marked digital speed indicators inside the tunnel if you do the over speeding you will be easily caught at the exit of the tunnel as they have install cameras and speed jammers. Even you are not allowed to stop your vehicle inside the tunnel unless there is some emergency. The fine for the speeding and stopping inside the tunnel is nearly like 5000 Indian rupees also your vehicle will be seized.

Two wheeler’s and four wheeler’s are allowed for now battery bikes are not allowed for now.

The total time to cross this tunnel takes nearly 15 minutes. This new routes via tunnel brings you down nearly to 71-km which could have taken to covered nearly 4 -5 hours.

The nearest place to visit this tunnel is from Manali Himachal Pradesh its like 28.4 km which nearly take 50 mins to reach.

Hi @Nyainurjanah yes definitely there are many travellers who come here on motorbikes it’s really fun. Riding a motorbike on mountains and passing via tunnel it’s completely different experience.

I drove a buggy car on another spot of this trip it was really fun. :grinning:
