Ask Maps: A New Opportunity for Local Guides Supporting Local Businesses

Hello LGs,

I have attended a few Ask Maps meetups on Google Maps, both in person and virtually. (@framesbysumedh and @TusharSuradkar are conducting them regularly) Also, I had an opportunity to listen to a Googler, Harish Simha, during the Namaste India Summit 2026 in Delhi last month. And I realised that this is a great addition to Google Maps, especially for local businesses. And I started digging in deep! Here are my observations for your perusal!

The introduction of Ask Maps marks a shift in how people discover local places. Instead of searching for cafés near me or restaurants in Pune, people can describe what they need in natural language.

How customers get benefits

With Ask Maps, customers can ask detailed, situation-based questions instead of opening multiple tabs to compare menus, reviews, and opening hours.

For example:

“Where can I find a quiet café with outdoor seating and charging points, open past 9 PM?”

Customers can get recommendations based on multiple factors, so they know what to expect before they go. They can also use conversational queries for more complex planning, such as finding an authentic Maharashtrian breakfast stop along a Mumbai to Pune journey.

The shift is simple: from searching for a place to describing a need.

For local businesses

This change can create new opportunities for small and specialised local businesses.

A business doesn’t necessarily have to compete only on the number of reviews or advertising budget. If its genuine offerings match a customer’s specific requirements, it may become relevant to that discovery.

This makes accurate and complete business information increasingly important. Details such as opening hours, categories, accessibility, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi, payment options, and menus can help customers understand what a business genuinely offers.

And this is where Local Guides can make a difference.

For Local Guides: D.E.A.L. with Ask Maps

I see a simple framework for Local Guides:

D — Discover

Use Ask Maps to explore local needs and find lesser-known businesses and places.

E — Experience

Visit the place yourself. Don’t rely only on what Ask Maps tells you.

A — Add Value

Share honest, useful reviews, original photographs, answers, edits, and updates.

L — Let People Discover

Share worthwhile local discoveries through Maps Lists, Connect, and our communities. Help deserving businesses gain awareness organically, without turning contributions into advertising.

Ask Maps: Brings it all together

Ask Maps can bring together different pieces of local information: reviews, photographs, business information, location, opening hours, categories, and customer experiences.

This makes the quality of information on Maps increasingly important.

As Local Guides, our role isn’t simply to upload photos or collect points. Our real-world contributions add context that a rating alone cannot provide. A review can explain what a place is particularly good for; a photograph can show its ambience, seating, entrance, or menu; and an update can prevent someone from relying on outdated information.

Ask Maps + Local Guides + Authentic Local Businesses = A Very Powerful Ecosystem

This is where I see the biggest opportunity.

  • Customers get better information and can make better decisions.

  • Local businesses get an opportunity to be discovered for what they genuinely offer.

  • Local Guides contribute authentic local knowledge that makes Maps more useful.

The important distinction is:

We should not contribute to promoting a business. We should contribute because the information deserves to be on Maps.

And there is a timely opportunity ahead.

No better time than festive seasons to work on Ask Maps!

During upcoming festival seasons, this becomes even more relevant. People will be searching for very specific local needs: traditional food, festive products, decorations, पूजा materials, events, family-friendly places, and businesses with special timings. Local Guides can Discover → Experience → Add Value → Let People Discover, helping people find what they need while giving deserving local businesses meaningful, organic visibility.

That is the powerful role Local Guides can play in the Ask Maps ecosystem.

Really well explained, @AjitThite

I especially like the point that our role is not to “promote” businesses, but to contribute genuine information that deserves to be on Maps. That distinction is very important.

With Ask Maps moving discovery toward more conversational and specific needs, accurate real-world information from Local Guides can become even more valuable.

The D.E.A.L. framework is a great way to look at our role. Discover - Experience - Add Value - Let People Discover - simple, practical, and very much in the spirit of genuine local contribution. :raising_hands:

D.E.A.L is genuinely an interesting framework. I am someone who loves finding local gems, something that is a niche and when we talked about Ask Maps during Namaste India summit, it felt like an apt way to enable people like me to Find the Niche and likewise for businesses to grow in their Niche.
