Art pieces in San Francisco International Airport!

San Francisco Internation.gif

Collage created by LocalGuide @jayasimha78 using art pieces pictures shot in SFO

I recently flew from San Francisco to Bengaluru through Singapore airlines. I had some extra time in the airport and decided to explore the Terminal G. Even though I have flown out of SFO many times, I hadn’t paid attention to art pieces and observation deck which exists in International Terminal.

Interestingly there is a huge art piece is hanging at each gate in SFO.

At the end of Terminal G there is a observation deck. Even though you may not be able to see flights landing or taking off from here, you can definetely enjoy planes taxing back and forth to the gate. There are several benches and also they have installed sculptures in the observation deck.

Here are couple of Sculptures in this observation deck.

Artist: Woody De Othello

Title: Time, Turn, and Light

Here is the description of this art piece as mentioned in the observation deck.

“Time, Turn and light depict ambiguous sets of hands interacting with everyday objects such as clocks, a flashlight, a candle, and a doorknob”

At each gate there is a huge art piece is hanging. Here is the picture which gives an idea of size of the art piece!

I really liked this piece of art. I found very unique among all other art pieces.

Artist: Juana Alicia, Emmanuel Catarino Montoya

Title: Santuario/Sanctuary

Description as indicated:

“Arrival at SFO is the beginning of a new life for many immigrants. Just as the surrounding wetlands provide sanctuary for shore birds during their annual migration. The murla is painted in Fresco Buono. An ancient technique that mixes pigment directly in to wet plaster”

Artist: Alice Shaw

Title: No Other Lands Their Glory Know

Description: “This photographic image is of a redwood forest on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco.”

Artist: Carmen Lomas Garza

Title: Baile!

Description: " This image of Mexican Folkloric dancers is inspired by the tradition of Mexican and Chinese tissue paper cutouts and french silhouettes."

Artist: Clare Rojas

Title: Blue Deer

Description: " Inspired by American folk art, quilting and storytelling, Clare Rojas creates dreamlike images executed in tightly drawn, crystalline shapes."

Artist: Squeak Carnwath

Title: Fly, Flight Fugit

Description: " When I’m in a plance, “Says squeak carnwath, “I often think about things that fly naturally.””

Artist: Leah Rosenberg

Title: Everywhere a Color

Description: “From the Golden Gate Bridge’s iconic International Orange Color, to the painted Ladies in the Western addition, Everywhere a Color pays homage to San Francisco. Each strip in this colorful artwork corresponds to landmark, moment or object that is unique to our beloved city”

Artist: Ricoh 99

Title: Thinking of Balmy Alley

Description: “This work, of a solitary boy totally absorbed in the act of painting, is inspired by a mural painted in 1993 by the artist and local youth in balmy alley, located in San Francisco’s mission District”

If you want to checkout some of the Murals in Balmy Alley, check out one my posts here.

Artist: Kota Ezawa

Title: Mondrian Meets the Beatles

Description: " In this diorama-like construction, the Beatles are shown exiting an airplance on their first US tour in 1964"

Artist: Rupert Garcia

Title: Bird Technology

Description: " This work combines two images. a bird that symbolizes natural flight and a geometric grid that symbolizes the technological advances that made human flight possible"

This was at the gate where I was getting on to my flight to Singapore!

Finally my flight getting ready to board the passengers!

@AniaKiser Thank You! Yes there is lot more art to explore in SFO. This is just Terminal G. Recently they have also started displaying photographs of local photographers who have taken San Francisco as subject in United Terminal. It is good to see they support art and artists.

I simply love the paints in SFO, @jayasimha78 , I fully agree with you.

but what surprised me the most is the series of medicinal plants represented on the floor of the airport’s international departures.

@TerryPG Thank You. Yes it was hectic and fun trip, since my daughters were also able to join the trip.

@ErmesT Indeed they are very impressive. Other thing which is happening in United Terminal, they are also displaying photographs from Local photographers about San Francisco, which is a great art addition to the airport.

The photos are excellent @jayasimha78 but the artwork is not - I find them to be average, boring and some are outrageously ugly.

My apologies to the artists but that is my honest opinion and first impression.

@TusharSuradkar Ha Ha, I don’t disagree with you. I am not a fan of abstract art either. Specially those sculptures are hard to comprehend. Appreciate honest feedback.

Oh gosh… did I ‘discover’ something in SF before @jayasimha78 !?!

The shots were taken in 2019 as I was waiting for my flight back to the UK. I also managed to capture one in a video that I made as I said farewell to Local Guides from Portugal and Spain!

The observation deck is really lovely and has a great view of the runways, with the gorgeous Californian terrain as the backdrop!

Selfie aside, absolutely brilliant post and so detailed too with all the attributions towards the various artists! Love them all and such a great terminal for hanging out! :sunglasses:
