Argentinian dishes - #TeamArgentina

One of the things that argentines like to do most is to hang out. Hang out with family, hang out with friends, with co-workers, in large groups or small groups, but we always hang out. And almost always, in all those meetings … We eat!

We meet sometimes to have breakfast with a latte with croissants, to have lunch or dinner, to eat an “asado” or some “empanadas”, or in the afternoon to share some delicious “mates”. The youngests hang out to have a beer or a “Fernet” in a bar, and the older ones in the house of whoever wants to invite with a pizza, a “picada” or a “milanesa napolitana” with french fries. What is certain is that we always get together, and if that meeting involves food … Much better!

The Argentinian population is composed in part of descendants of natives, but also, in large number, by immigrants of different origins. Once, the Mexican poet Octavio Paz said: “The Mexicans descend from the Aztecs, the Peruvians from the Incas, and the Argentinians from the ships”. And it must be said that in good part he is right … The current inhabitants of our country, have a good mix of ancestors. This mixture of cultures of course, also impacted on what we eat today. Our current cuisine is a combination of native cuisine such as the “mate” and most of the meals made with corn, beans, potatoes and cassava; the african cuisine of whom we inherited, among other things, the “achuras” we eat in the “asado” and the “mondongo” that is cooked in stews; the “Criolla” cuisine inherited from the Spanish colonizers; and the most current Spanish, together with the Italian cuisine, as a consequence of the massive immigration at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX.

Nowadays, argentinian cuisine offers a wide variety of dishes for all tastes and palates. In this article, I would like to share a list of the most typical foods and drinks that are so characteristic of our table and that cannot be missing in any argentinian table. If you want to know more about them, I will be publishing one post for each topic with more information and photos, one by one. Keep posted, to read about argentinian food!

Great post about a very important topic! I love your writing style, always so animated and fun to read. I can’t wait until all the posts all published and Connect is full of Argentine deliciousness.

As @Cecilita said, food is included every time we hang out. In fact, we recently discovered that when a meal is included in a meet-up from the Buenos Aires community, more people attend!

Its hard to pick my favorite argentine dish, but I would have to choose either asado or facturas!

What about you guys, @Cecilita @CaroGuiniazu @FaridTDF @kroza @ValeriaA @ErmesT ?

Oh @Jesi you put me in trouble here! I have such a sweet tooth I must go with Dulce de Leche, on everything! xD

Team Argentina@Jesi @Cecilita @CaroGuiniazu @FaridTDF if you dare coming here one Spring or Summer for our first meet up I’ll have you try tereré, the iced version of a mate, a gift from my neighbours, Paraguay!

I just had my dinner, @Cecilita , but after reading your post, I am ready to start again, and again, and again. Indeed food is one of the important “social” aspect of the life in Argentina, and in this you guys are very close to the Italians. There is always a good reason for “eating something together” and, as far as I know, everything is good. I was simply impressed by the long line of restaurants in Puerto Madero (and I have to said that I tried the most), not avoiding the delicious Achuras. Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, German food (and more) are exhibited everywhere, the only difficult thing is to choose what you want to eat, and where. @KarenVChin , as I already invited you to travel with me in Argentina, I need to warn you now: we need at least one month of strong diet, before the trip.

A technical note to you, Cecilia. Please check your links, especially the one about Asado

Great post, I can’t wait for the “coming soon” part.

Wonderful post @Cecilita !! Congratulations!!

Argentine food is delicious and there are many dishes I love. But there is one in particular that reminds me of my childhood; homemade DULCE DE LECHE.

I had the good fortune of growing up in an Estancia (Argentinian ranch) and once a week, my grandmother collected milk from our dairy cows and in a huge copper container, called paila, she slowly prepared the most delicious dulce de leche I have ever tasted. When she finished cooking, she would let us run our fingers through the paila to eat the “raspa”, which is nothing but the rests of dulce de leche that are attached to the walls of the pot. And trust me, this is always the best part.

Oh @Jesi ! What a difficult question!! I think my preferred dish is also the asado, but I also love a good “Guiso Carrero” (carrero Stew) or a Lents Stew.

Although I must confess that sometimes I open the refrigerator and I can not resist the temptation to eat a good spoonful of dulce de leche.

Thanks @marcorp !

I am very glad to hear that you liked the asado and that you are a humita fan. I have a post about both meals almost ready to be published very soon!

A few years ago I had the opportunity to travel to Lima, and I was invited to a “Parrillada”. It was so yummy! The cooking process was very similar to our asado, but not identical. I found principally some differences in the type of meat we use. I remember that in that ocassion I had the opportunity to taste the “papas a la huancaína”. I think I never tasted potatoes like those ones. That sauce was amazing and those potatoes had a marvelous flavour. We do not have here in Argentina potatoes like yours!

Do you know the receipe of papas a la huancaína?
