Are notifications getting more relevant?

For a long time I have been wondering how the notifications about views on recently added photos and videos were generated. It seems a bit redicously to declare “14 people already saw your video” when 14 views is nothing compared to the number of views on other photos/videos uploaded at approximately the same time.

Today I got this notification

17k views in less than a week is in my opinion more worthy of a notification.

Did you also notice that these notifications are now less laughable?

  • Yes
  • I haven’t noticed
  • I turned off these notifications

In der Vergangenheit wurden wirklich immer die geringsten Aufrufe gezeigt.

Aktuell habe ich keine bekommen. @MortenCopenhagen

I agree with you @MortenCopenhagen

That’s a great observation @MortenCopenhagen I also noticed recently that these notifications are now more relevant than a few months back

Dear @MortenCopenhagen I’ve noticed this too! It really comes down to how the platform tries to encourage newer contributors. A ping for 14 views is a huge deal for someone who just uploaded their first photo, but it definitely feels completely out of place when your other uploads are pulling in 17k views in a week. It is a relief if they are finally adjusting the algorithm to scale the notifications based on our average view counts

I’ve always been puzzled about what “saw your photo” or saw your video" means. Sometimes the photo displayed zero views, but still the notification said that many people saw it. How could that be?

I haven’t noticed the difference yet, but I will monitor the situation more closely for a while.

The other notification that puzzles me is the one about being “in the Top 10% of Restaurant Reviewers”. If I’m in the top 10% with my low level of restaurant activity, it confirms that no one else in my country is an active Local Guide.

I believe “people saw your…” Refers to views. What else could it possibly be?

Thanks for keeping your eyes on this.

I agree about the “you are in the top 1 or 10 percent”-praises. I just ignore them as Google never cared to define the area and timing if this.

Cheers

Update.

Maybe what I reported above was a random lucky punch. This is today’s notification

Maybe we should turn this into an encouragement to Google Maps to get this fixed…

Yes, I’ve noticed that too @MortenCopenhagen :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
The newer notifications definitely feel more meaningful now, especially when they highlight contributions with significantly higher engagement like 17k views in just a few days.

Previously, some notifications felt a bit random for very small numbers, so this change makes the system feel more relevant and motivating for contributors :raising_hands:
