Antiques Street Market

Have you ever been to an Antiques Street Market?

An Antiques Street Market is indeed an opportunity for taking amazing photos, while traveling back in time, remembering that “oh, my grandmother had the same dishes” or “my uncle was using that kind bicycle

If you visit the Antiques Street Market during Christmas time, it can be also an opportunity for some very original present.

In my area you can find a lot of Antiques and Collectibles Street Market, normally held on Sunday, once per month.

I visited the Antiques Street Market in Mogliano Veneto on Sunday, December 8, that is the Italian Christmas period begins with The Conception’s celebration. This means that the Street Market was really crowded, with a lot of people trying to find some original gift for Christmas.

For us it was a moment for buying some present too, but also a great opportunity to test the camera of my Pixel 3XL

I mentioned already my grandmother’s dishes collection, but you can find also glasses and glass vases, decorated bottles, and more

What about ancient technology? I am sure that a lot of young IT people would love to have at home some of the next pieces:

  • Old telephones - You nave probably seen something like that in some old B&W movie
  • Bellows camera - I had the opportunity to use one of that cameras on my 20s, when it was already just a collectible piece
  • Old Radios - My grandmother had one of that huge tube radios (LOL)
  • Typewriters - I have used some typewriters, before the digital era of computers, but the one I used was much modern than those on the photo

I am also sure that @PaulPavlinovich would buy all the old Lego sets available on the market (at least this is what he told me on my post on Instagram).

What about you? Do you like Lego too?

What I found amazing was the huge amount of dolls, all along the market, all of them watching you. Some of the doll was really beautiful.

There was more, of course, and I can share more if you like.

What about you? Are you ever shopping on an Antiques Market? How do they call them on your area? Flea Market?

Do you have some photo to share too?

Just let me know, I am really curious

Wonderful post @ErmesT , thank you for sharing your visit at Mogliano Veneto.

I find very nice those antiques streets markets, as you say you can find lot of really interesting things like the old telephones, typewriters and even lego. It is always nice to see old pieces and discover how life evolved … for example from a black and white telephone screen :-).

Hi @ErmesT

I lived as a child in a country where all typewriters were registered for state security, if you were typing something against the regime you were found and imprisoned.
Censorship works at the highest level.
Some Western radio transmissions were blown up by special powerful transmitters located in the Godeanu mountains.
If you listened to Western radio stations in your house you were arrested and put in jail or in the mad hospital
The glossy colored magazines I saw only one copy of Pif Gadget.
Black and white cathode-ray television was a luxury.
The personal telephone station had to be approved by the state security.
Camcorders with film did not exist for the public, only some cameras of questionable quality
porcelain objects were found but they were expensive, if I broke one we were severely punished

So you can understand that such things can not have sentimental value, and almost all were dumped in the 1990s, after we managed to get democracy in December 89.

Now there are two or three antique shops. but most of the products are brought from outside, I will go to the shop windows to make a picture or two

Thank you so much, @LuigiZ

I reserved something just for you, as I remember that the tradition of the Nativity figurines is very common in Naples.

Thanks a lot @ErmesT , very kind :-).

Yes you remember correctly, this is something very traditional in Naples, in fact we do have a very famous street in the city center where all types of hand made “pastori” are made, I think you know about San Gregorio Armeno.

Below a picture not in Christmas time and a close up to some “actual” creations.

#Incredible market.!!!

it is truly said “Old is Gold” condition is, you should have that sight to know whats best. because not everything that shines is gold.

I have seen such markets at many places, these markets are popularly known as Old markets, theft markets, recycled markets, antique markets, etc. Even more similar is, they all are street markets. Here credit goes to photography skills of @ErmesT . He chose right photos and created an impact into this post.

Keep it up guys. Loved to see all the pics even in your comments.

Waiting to receive some antique item as gift from you @ErmesT .

Cheers.!!

Lovely post, @ErmesT !

I love a good indoor or outdoor market! My parents used to love going antiquing or to flea markets. I used to love trying to get vendors to lower prices for items. That LEGO selection is amazing. I would compete for some with @PaulPavlinovich !

My favorite finds are old books!

Thank you for your replies and for the photos, @To_paul

I do remember the recent story of your country, that I had the opportunity to visit several times on the 1995 - 1996, working near Otopeni, on the new industrial area.

Antiques are for me a piece of our recent history. When I was a child, growing up in a farm, I remember the merchants of antiques. They were visiting all the farmers, offering to buy “old things”.

Most of the farmers were happy to sell, for a few money, what they just considered “old”, not knowing nor imagining the future value of what they had

Hi @ErmesT

The country has changed a lot, especially the Otopeni area. You will not recognize anything now, until the 2000s there was a lot of free space, now there are buildings all around Bucharest

In the Maramures area there have been numerous cases when English citizens bought hundreds of years old oak houses cheaply, dismantled them and left with them in the truck in the u.k.
People were happy to sell the land with houses for some money

Also a sad story, in the city in me was stationed on the Danube river for several decades the royal yacht Freedom, following some scams you sold as scrap iron
Many other pieces of heritage have been stolen, such as the Dacian bracelets
They have reached international auction houses

Dinosaur and cave bear fossils from the heritage site are sold on ebay

From the cave in the Apuseni mountains, traces of the Neandetrthal man were stolen

Thank you very much

Hi @ErmesT

Grand bazar is interesting place for photographers and travelers. I was there in 2014 early morning at 9.00 am, just after opening. There are more pictures in my post about Istanbul.

Have happy new year to you and early healing to you mum.

When I was a kid my neighbour used to operate flea market stands @JordanSB . Often on Sunday mornings he’d collect me and I’d go help him for the day. He would sell and buy at his stands. It was a good way for me to earn some cash. He also used to pay me to sit next to his daughter on the school bus so no-one else could. I never told him I would have happily done that for free :).
