Dear Local Guides,
It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I am announcing the end of the Top 100 Local Guides Leaderboards here on Connect. After 6 incredible years of tracking our community’s amazing achievements, I am forced to bring this project to a close. The May Leaderboards will be the last ![]()
As many of you know from my recent updates, recent UI changes have significantly altered how Maps contribution data is displayed for some Local Guides. While certain external websites exist that simply scrape basic point totals and total media data, our Top 100 Leaderboards have always gone much deeper—tracking nuanced metrics like individual photo and video counts, precise photo/video views, specific country stats, and our dynamic “Movers & Shakers” category.
Because of these recent changes, the deep-level, granular data required for these analyses is no longer visible to affected users. We are now left with only total media and total media views, which unfortunately removes the foundation upon which our most valuable leaderboards were built.
Since these changes rolled out, I have invested a massive amount of time and effort trying to find a workaround to fairly account for this missing data, especially given the fragmented nature of the rollout—where some Local Guides see the changes and others do not. Of course, eventually this UI change will be rolled out to everyone!
Data Loss Problem
Unfortunately, we are now facing yet another major issue: several Local Guides have suddenly lost a significant number of contributions in key metrics, such as Answers.
The data loss issue has now been fixed.
Why This Decision Was Made
While I have fought hard to overcome the data gaps caused by the UI changes, and while the metric drops and loss of associated points issue has been fixed, the loss of granular data because of the UI changes makes it impossible to move forward. It has simply become unfair to publish competitive leaderboards when the playing field is no longer level through no fault of the participants.
A Final Thank You
Running these leaderboards for the past 6 years has been an absolute labor of love. I am incredibly proud of what we built, the milestones we celebrated together, and the friendly competition that brought so many of us closer.
Thank you to every single Local Guide who participated, updated their stats, cheered others on, and supported this project over the years. This isn’t how I wanted this journey to end, but I am deeply grateful for the community we created together.
In keeping with our long-standing tradition of showcasing the incredible photography of our community, this post is honored to feature a beautiful photo taken by leaderboard participant @Rednewt74. It captures a stunning moment of the sky in motion, a beautiful reminder of the work we celebrate.
With gratitude,
Hasta La Vista
