Continuing from the many posts covering our visit to Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, which is located on the island of Borneo. (Read previous many posts here). This post is good today as we head into the weekend, when we want to try to relax. So how about getting to know some of the fancy and delicious drinks we had during our trip to Sarawak.
[Photo below] - This is one of the local favorites. Iced Teh-C with Apong sugar. Basically means iced milk tea with Nipah palm sugar. Deliciously cold and sweet with that smoky aroma which comes from the Nipah palm sugar. Amazing on a hot or cold day.
[Photo below] - Hot buttered local Sarawak milk coffee. Deliciously roasted local coffee beans from Sarawak, brewed with condensed and evaporated milk, flavored with a knob of butter. It somehow works amazingly well.
[Photo below] - Same as above, but the iced version of buttered local Sarawak milk coffee. Crazily rich and frothy. Skip the whip cream for sure.
[Photo below] - Now moving on to something lighter. Iced barley lime and lemon. Super cooling drink of barley water, flavored with slices of lime and lemon.
[Photo below] - Definitely one of my favorites. Sugar cane + coconut. First break open young coconuts and take out the coconut water and scrape the flesh. Then add on freshly squeezed sugar cane water. Add ice. Amazing flavors.
[Photo below] - Iced milked coffee with tons of Nipah palm sugar. Very smoky flavor, rich, thick and an instant wake me up drink.
Now we come to our fancy dessert drinks ![]()
[Photo below] - The infamous “Suku Driver”, which is a very fancy watermelon juice topped with lychees, longans, pineapple pieces and ice. Amazingly cooling and really refreshing.
[Photo below] - The Sarawak ABC Air Batu Campur, which means mixed shaved ice with tons of condiments like jelly, red bean, some fruits, all topped with shaved ice and evaporated milk and lots of Nipah palm sugar. Amazingly sweet and sticky.
[Photo below] - One of my favorites, a much lighter dessert drink, the Sarawak Metahon, which is a clear drink with shaved ice, topped with syrup, jelly, fruit, lemon pieces. Very light and refreshing.
[Photo below] - Another fancy drink that the store calls “Ban Ban Lai”, which means take your time to eat and savor this
. Or eat slowly. Mixture of sago, barley, lychees, topped with corn and syrup with shaved ice. Amazing.
[Photo below] - A delicious mango dessert called Mango Island. From this angle it looks like an island doesn’t it? ![]()
[Photo below] - This is another light and delicious drink called the “Rainbow”, first topped with shaved ice, and when one digs into it, a myriad of colors emerge.
Next we head to one of the cafes for more fancy drinks.
[Photo below] - Foamed iced coffee with Nipah palm sugar. I forgot what’s the actual fancy name of this drink. Delicious.
[Photo below] - This drink is called Matcha MM, which is that mmmmm sound after a nice sip. Milked green tea, with ice and Nipah palm sugar.
[Photo below] - This drink is called the Sexy Orange. Looks sexy doesn’t it. Nice fresh orange juice with special flavorings added.
[Photo below] - The fancy name of this drink is Don’t Ask Me Why. Yes, don’t ask me why we add tea on top of orange juice, with foam on top. I dont know the reason, but it’s delicious.
[Photo below] - This fancy named drink is called Drop Boom. Like after an explosion, everything is hazy, just like this drink. Good nice barley with lemon. ![]()
We then headed for more shaved ice desserts.
[Photo below] - And then more ice desserts. Shaved ice with Nipah palm sugar and corn. Smoky, sweet, delicious.
[Photo below] - And finally the Sarawak Cendol Ice Kacang. Deliciously flavored with Nipah palm sugar.
These are just a few of the many nice delicious drinks we had in Sarawak, and as you can see, many are flavored with the local favorite Gula Apong or Nipah Palm Sugar. All are deliciously good, fancy names or not.
Come and try some of these.
