Here are some interesting stuff about Alaska:
- "Alaska has more than 100 volcanoes.
- Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the United States combined, roughly 34,000 miles.
- Dog mushing is the state sport of Alaska, which was once the main mode of transportation. The Iditarod dog sledding race is the state’s largest sporting event.
- When it comes to wildlife, Alaska is famous for salmon, moose, caribou, bears, whales, bison, puffins, jellyfish, etc. When it comes to scenery, Alaska is famous for glaciers and fjords, mountains, and more lakes, rivers, and waterways than one could dream of.
- While it is legal to shoot bears, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited.
- Russia controlled most of the area that is now Alaska from the late 1700s until 1867, when it was purchased by U.S. Secretary of State William Seward for $7.2 million, or about two cents an acre.
- The narrowest distance between mainland Russia and mainland Alaska is approximately 55 miles. The stretch of water between these two islands is only about 2.5 miles wide and actually freezes over during the winter so you could technically walk from the US to Russia on this seasonal sea ice.
- Alaska is cold, very cold. Alaska has the coldest winters, the coldest summers, the longest winter, the most freezing degree days, and on and on. Temperatures in the -30°s and -40°s are a near daily occurrence from November through March in the interior portion of the state.
- Russian America (Russian: Русская Америка, Russkaya Amyerika) was the name of the Russian colonial possessions in North America from 1733 to 1867. Its capital was Novo-Arkhangelsk (New Arkhangelsk), which is now Sitka, Alaska, United States.
- Some of Alaska’s bizarre moose-specific legislation has included laws against pushing a moose from a plane, viewing a moose from a plane, and giving a moose beer.
- Moose, caribou, and bear killed by cars in Alaska are considered property
- of the state. When road kill is reported, the carcasses are butchered by volunteers and distributed as food to charity organizations.
- Many hotels in Alaska offer Northern Lights wake-up calls upon request"
