Ait Benhaddou built by the Berber people of Morocco after the 17th century, the ancient village is the most distinctive and well-preserved mound castle, so called Kasbah, and has even won the title of the most beautiful village in Morocco.
Ait Benhaddou was listed as a World Culture Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.
The ancient city was built using the terra-cotta mud bricks typical of Morocco. Walking toward Ait Benhaddou, every corner of the walls and roofs of houses seems to be a magical village temporarily conjured out of a fairy tale. The bright red houses make people feel unreal and unrealistic, but they really stand out in front of them.
In the heyday of ancient times, it was said that the old city could accommodate about 1,000 people. However, nowadays, due to the convenience of water and business and the situation, the city has lost its original defense function and many other considerations. Most of the residents in the city have moved to the new city, with less than 10 households remaining. Now there will be interest in the old town, if not from tourists, then from film companies that want to shoot movies.
Morocco’s film history has attracted many filmmakers from around the world since the 1950s because of its unique landscape and ancient city, and Ait Benhaddou is the best-known of these scenarios. Movies such as: “Gladiator”,”Babel”, “The Mummy”, “Game of Thrones”, “The Sheltering Sky”, etc.
The atmosphere of the traditional city makes people forget modern civilization and go back hundreds of years in time.
Thank you for sharing your incredible journey to Ait Benhaddou and these beautiful photos with us!
As a person who grew up in Morocco, this place is among my favorites! As this fortress is just a few kilometers away from Ourazazate, did you go there? Did you visit the cinema studios?
What did you enjoy the most there? Did you buy something artisanal from this area?
Personally, I think that Moroccan food is among the best in the world! Did you enjoy the food there? Here is an article about some Moroccan dishes, did you try any of them?
Hello @iorikun301 thank you for the echo… I think this village is popular because it’s the must-see attraction in the Morocco travel…have a nice day!
Hello @BorrisS I enjoyed the Moroccan foods very much, especially the Bastilla dish mixed with salty and sweet ingredients.
I stayed at the Le Berbere Palace hotel in Ourazazate and I am glad to recommend this wonderful hotel. Certainly, I also visited the Atlas Studios which with lots of interesting spectacular scenes. In Fez, I bought two “Djellaba” , the short one with hood is very practical when in cold weather.
The wealth over there is the most which I take delight in, the blue sky, clean air and the sunny.
The whole village looks dry, is it hot there @porkgoldzhuzhu ? interesting mud brick wall of the houses. I saw them a bit when I was a kid but now people don’t use it for the wall anymore.
Hello @Sophia_Cambodia I think it’s located on the northern Africa and near Sahara desert that its climate would be dry and some hot, but the air is clean and the weather most the time is sunny day and sky is very blue…
do you mean that in your hometown when you were kid, the mud house existed then?
