Agrasen ki Baoli (New Delhi, India)

Agrasen ki Baoli is an ancient stepwell constructed in 13-14th century.

It has three levels and consists of a number of arches one another. It has more than 100 stairs and goes at a very deep level. You have to be careful while walking down, as the floor is little slippery.

It is a part of ancient historical buildings of Delhi. Some people consider it to be a part of Tughlaq dynasty, others consider it to be made by King Agrasen.

It is at a walking distance from Barakhamba Road metro station. You can take a cab if the climate is little hot & humid.

Hello @Tushar18 ,

Thank you for sharing this great location and amazing photos with us.

Is there any explanation that you know and could provide when it comes to these stone windows and gates? I mean, were these real windows that were covered with stones afterwards? The architecture of the place, reminded me a bit of the one of Campo Santo, in Perpigan, France.

Furthermore, isn’t it a bit dangerous, especially for children, as there is no safety barriers!?

Hello @BorrisS ,

Thanks for showing interest in this beautiful place.

Well, as I said that basically it was a stepwell, which means it was used to store water during summer days. During medieval times, there was a huge Mughal empire settled in Delhi and a number of troops were stationed here for fighting battles. Thus, need of water increased and this Baoli (stepwell) was built to store water for adverse situations.

During those days, people used to step down and take water from here. Also, the water was being regularly cleaned by the king’s authorities.

The closed stone windows were given as a design of Indo-Islamic architecture. During that time, some paintings were also drawn in here. Mostly, lime was used for this purpose.

The windows (which have some inner space) were used as personal washrooms or cleaning areas, as the water was available there.

As far as safety is concerned, I personally never heard about any accident here. But I thank you for pointing it out. I’ll let the Baoli authorities and Tourism department know about this. May be they could take some precautionary measures accordingly.

@Tushar18 Thank you for sharing this interesting information. This place looks like the palaces in One Thousand and One Nights fairy tales, though of course as far as I understood it’s nothing similar.

@Tushar18 oh…is it really, that you didn’t read them? It is so unexpected, I thought everybody in the world have read them. I constantly forget about the difference between the countries and variety of things which I don’t know myself, even in such little things as favorite fairy tales.

Be sure to read them all. Some of them are childish and some are…not childish, but all of them are very wise.

@OlgaKlimchik It is true that there are cultural, regional and religious differences across the world, but what I suppose is that the values remain the same. And that is what which binds us all together.

As far as this tale is concerned, I think I’ve heard about it. Or something similar to it. I’ve also seen some wise Arab tales on TV when I was a kid.

Definitely, I would read them. These stories actually inculcate wisdom in us. Which book or online source would you recommend? And are these stories available in video form on YouTube?

@Tushar18 I think you can find it without any problems in internet either in text form or on YouTube and maybe in the bookshop in your city. And I think that you surely saw these tales on TV in your childhood, not all of them.

I recommend namely to read the book, it’s not big, including the series of short fairy tales.
