Adding links to a Connect topic or reply when using an Android phone

I was recently trying to help another LG with adding links to their Star video post and then how to correctly comment on a star photo/video/360.The Guide uses a phone to access Connect. It is a bit of a paint to do this on a phone, so I made two screen recordings of the process. If you use an iPhone you are on your own.

Part 1: Getting the link to the star post

Part 2: Posting in the star discussion thread. (this assumes you have already copied the link)

For a detailed written explanation of the technique (which also covers the process when using a desktop) please see my post here.

The technique that is shown in the recording applies to any time you want to add a link to or tag another LG in a topic you are creating or a reply that you are making.

This permalink method allows you to create links to any topic or reply that you want to refer to. It is a huge help to write a post like this:

”I was reading a post by @Rednewt74 where he talks about blah blah”, so that Guides that are reading your topic/reply can easily go to the source you are referring to and read it as well. I have found countless really informative posts because the guide writing a topic or reply that I was reading included a link to the source that originally inspired them.

AdamGT brought his post on "How can i found my Google maps contribution profile link" to my attention so I am including it as well.

This link is to the post I wrote about: Adding links to a Connect post using an Android phone.

I hope it is helpful to you.

@tony_b - I saw your like on the other post, so I am tagging you on this one. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks @Rednewt74 , but the title scares me. I’m young enough to use a phone but old enough to prefer doing everything on a computer.

Will still continue to follow up on your post though.

Hi Alfred @Rednewt74

I noticed that we use the term post slightly differently.

I normally call the opening post a post while a reply to a post is called a reply or comment.

Linking to a post is straight forward, while linking to a reply will need us to first get the permalink.

I don’t think calling a reply a post is wrong, but I just wanted you to know that others use the terms slightly differently.

Under our connect profiles posts are called Topics started and comments are called Replies as shown below.

My point was just that they are counted separately. And we only need to use permalinks for replies.

All the best

@MortenCopenhagen ,

Thank you. I agree that reply would be more accurate in most cases, and will edit my post to reflect this. I often think of them as comments (which isn’t a term connect uses) because I am often commenting rather than replying to a specific guide. If one is in fact creating a new post, and want to refer to an existing post or reply, then the permalink method is needed.

@tony_b ,

When writing a reply or new post and connect I greatly prefer doing it on my computer. I find it much easier than on my phone. I gather however some Guides use their phone exclusively (I was coaching one recently), and that’s why I created this particular post. The principle is the same on any device, but how you accomplish it varies

Indeed @Rednewt74 many seem to have problems and need some help finding links to posts (topics) and replies/comments within them but also to their Maps profile. I have also written posts about these issues:

  1. How to link to a Connect comment and the solution in

  2. My Google maps contribution profile link issue

AdamGT, thanks for bringing your reply about how to add your Google Maps profile. I will add it to my topic/ post.

I think that sometimes really helpful information gets lost (or at least harder to find) when shared in the course of replies to a topic. I had been having a discussion with a guide about their difficulty with links in general and so that is why I started a new topic on it.
