Adding a beach to the map

As I understood from other posts, Google has removed the beach category from the “Add A Place” function. Also, they say to use the Send Feedback>other feedback menu to request for a beach to be added to the map. The problem is I cannot find other feedback menu. I tried it on iOS, Android and Win 10. All the same. First of all it doesn’t want to send feedback if no road selected. If I select a road, it gives me the options related to roads and no other possibilities to send feedback. So after reading a lot of posts related to adding a place with the category not listed in the standard list I still cant understand how to do it. Why is editing so time-consuming and not straightforward in Google maps?

Hi @Ser9ei

Google Map has removed the category (Public Beach) from the category selection menu, that’s true, but you can choose an alternative category (park) for it, which is close to performing the meaning you want.

Hi @MAHMOUDALWAN

Just selecting “another” category is not to be recommended since Google uses the list of categories to guide us on what places we can and can not add to the map. Beaches are not places Local Guides can and should add to the map except via feedback as @Ser9ei mentioned.

Sorry, @Ser9ei I don’t have any good help to offer except tagging @ErmesT . He most likely can help you out,

Cheers

First of all, I do not believe that any beach would be missing from Maps @Ser9ei

.
What you are trying to do is a segmentation of an existing beach, maybe into a private and captive segment. Then, let the business owning that claim the slot.

Still, if you want to communicate about the discovery of a new beach, you can use the “Send feedback” “Your opinion about Maps” and include a screenshot featuring the shore.

@C_T , why wouldn’t you believe that something can be missing from the map? I can find something missing daily. Google maps are far from perfect partly because of the unclear editing process and long review times. Some changes are approved within one day while others can stay pending forever.

I’ll try to send feedback via opinion. Thanks for the hint. Let’s see what comes out of it…

My best guess as to why Beach is no longer a category available to Local Guides is the fact that the term is not very well defined. There are major beaches where thousands of people go to enjoy the sun and water. And there are tiny tiny beaches that are not really attractive and only known to very few people. So if all places where water meets land can be called a beach this will dilute the value of the more attractive beaches.

That makes sense but removing the beach category doesn’t guarantee that people don’t add unnecessary and often personal information to the map. I still encounter places like somebody’s name under a random category on the map. I understand that people just don’t understand what they are doing. They just want their home to be shown on the map.

In my case, I wanted to add a well-known and actually the only public beach in town.

By then, was categorizing the attractive beach that can be visited by tourist as “tourist attraction” suitable, @MortenCopenhagen ?

Hi @iorikun301

My answer would be: No. A public beach is a public beach and not a tourist attraction. We should always use the most specific categories.

Because:

  1. There is a category called Public beach eventhough it is not available for us and other Maps users

  2. It is my understanding that Google uses the list of categories available to us as a way of communicating which categories we can and cannot add to the map.

Other categories in the same group are roads, lakes, train stations, bus stops, parks, intersection. It sometimes help thinking of it this way: “Places” that are not just a point on the map but needs to be be marked as an area (a polygon) can only be added by Google staff. Hence we need to use feedback.

I know this way of thinking is not failproof. Shopping centers should be polycons yet we can add them. So the only way to know is through experience and studying old posts here on Connect. And in addition missing translation from the US English list of categories into your local language can make this even more more difficult to figure out yourself.

And Google is not doing a great job explaining this issue.

I hope this helps. Should I be wrong on any of this, please let me know.

Cheers
