Added place immediately not applied

I’ve attempted a few times to add a new statue erected in a neighboring town to the map. It’s right down the road from an existing statue so I marked it the same - as a historical landmark. Whenever I try to add it, it immediately goes to ‘not applied’. I’ve tried adding it as a park, too, thinking I might be triggering the algorithm with the historical landmark category. I have phone number and website of the owning organization, photos, the exact location, the date it was opened - all the information I can give maps, I have. Still, immediate rejection. Thoughts?

Also, I’ve looked at the ‘check the facts’ tab for that area to see if its pending by someone else and it doesn’t show up anywhere.

Hi @Jciesla

I have been there myself. Exactly the same frustration.

Please know that the validation is automatic. The way to add statues is to include a link to an official page about the sculpture. Maybe the Municipality has a sculpture catalogue online where one page is dedicated to the new sculpture.

When Google electronically can check the page confirming the name and existence the approval will happen.

Also, adding a photo can help. Don’t add a lot of photos.

Sometimes sculptures are located it high Maps traffic areas where spammers find value in adding spam. That may have caused Google to block all new additions for a period.

I hope these tips are helpful for you.

Please also read Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”? if you haven’t already done so.

Hello @Jciesla ,

If a statue was just erected then it is not a historical landmark. That category is for items like Notre Dame in Paris, the pyramids in Giza, etc. They don’t have to be that famous, but locally it might apply to a city wall from 500 years ago or something similar. Official plaques telling the history of a place also often qualify. The feature itself needs to have a known, significant history and it needs to be a landmark.

The Statue category and the features to which it was attached were removed from Maps.

Historical Landmark is frequently abused to get things on the map that don’t have an appropriate category. If there is no appropriate category then it likely does not belong on the map. If the statue already on the map that you mentioned is not actually a historical landmark then you likely should queue it for deletion. And example of a statue that would qualify is the Statue of Liberty.

Some significant statues might qualify under the sculpture category, but I would use that cautiously. This was a category that everyone started using when statue was removed; but normally when a category is removed that’s not a sign that they want every example of that removed category to be added some other way. I’ve noticed that many sculptures have been removed from the map.

It does have plaques that describe the history which I also uploaded a photo of. There’s a whole series of these statues that outline historical events in the city (Seneca Falls NY) where women gained their right to vote among other events. They added a new statue to the same series along the trail so I don’t understand how all the other ones got added and this one is automatically shot down even with the link to their website and photos of the plaques.
