If we discuss about accessibility in Kolkata, we have mixed accessibility available at various places. Mixed accessibility are the places that might be half accessible and half not.
When I go to bank branches and the ATMs, most of those are not accessible. The tourists might find many accessible places, as in our city, expensive and tourist areas have most of the accessible shops, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc.
Today, when I was passing through the New Alipore area of Kolkata, I suddenly saw an ATM that is accessible. I looked at it carefully and found that it’s truly accessible; you can access it with a wheelchair easily.
I was even surprised by the texture of the ramp that was attached to the ATM; with this texture, the wheel of the wheelchair will get a perfect grip to enter the ATM.
It also features tactile path, and two railings that can be used to climb upwards to the ATM by grasping them with your hands. So if you are in a wheelchair near or in the New Alipore area, then this is the perfect ATM for you.
Thank you so much @TusharSuradkar Ji, for your comment. I have learnt something new through your work. Locals here also refer it as braille path/block/footway unofficially.
Thank you for throwing light on the braille letters on the keypad and headphone jack, as it’s too common in Kolkata that why I missed it in my post but the ramp is something new.
Thank you for this post, @Shaunak
I agree with you
They understood that accessibility is not a cost, but an investment for the future, because it can bring more customers.
This is a point I always want to emphasize to business owners: accessibility means more tourists and more customers
