Thank you for this great Initiative @ShafiulB , and all Comilla Local guide Team, including @Kamalhasnainee (how are you, my friend)
I like the idea, and I was just preparing a post for a subject that I really care, for offering to our friends with accessibility problem the possibility to enjoy also the nature, through accessible paths.
I wrote a post about this subject long time ago: A path for wheelchair at 1600 meters above sea level. I was quite young at that time (in term of "Local Guide age), and my edit of the POI was rejected (probably because I live 500 Km away to that place).
Today, when I read your post, I wanted to check the area again, and the POI was there.
You are doing good brother @ShafiulB . Nice activity, I like this. Thanks for starting this great initiative. I am just coming and will join with all of you.
Oh @ErmesT dear friend my big bro, I am fine. Thanks, How are you brother?
@ErmesT Thanks for your beautiful reply. It seems my post is merged into your thinking and what on your mind. Its really so interesting and I know how helpful you are for the communities near you not only Connect. I am so thankful to meet like you fellows.
@Kamalhasnainee Thanks for joining here. We are waiting for your joining in our Accessibility walk directly. Hope you will connect us sooner.
Thank you @ShafiulB for starting this off, I hope to see some great examples of accessibility.
I really like this photo @ErmesT ! People in wheelchairs should have access to beautiful areas and this seems like a great solution.
This is actually what I had in mind when we were talking about accessibility on the beach @EmekaUlor . Installing pathways like this one several places along the beach seems to me like a great idea.
and yes, I was talking with @EmekaUlor exactly about this subject, that will be the subject of one of my next post. In my area most of the beaches have this kind of pathway, and also some special wheelchair available, with large wheels
I saw the photo of the wheelchair with the “rough terrain” wheels in @EmekaUlor 's post, and I agree that they are great for offering access to the entire beach.
The question is rather if they will be offered free of charge by the public, or if wheelchair users will have to purchases them on their own.
How does it work in your area @ErmesT ? Can people reserve a wheelchair in advance and then have it provided on arrival at the beach?
How many wheelchairs do they have at their disposal?
I don’t have (not yet) an answer about the number of available wheelchairs.
In Veneto region the accessibility program for the beaches started on 2009 with Nemo beach. It is actually a regional project, as you can see in the web page of Disabili.com. In some place you have to make a reservation, that can include, if needed, the pick-up directly on the parking lot. Here a document from Eraclea municipality.
I am up for your Accessibility Photo Challenge. My photo is not at beautiful as @ermest’s photo, but very practical.
I do have an interesting story to share with my Accessibility Photo Challenge submission.
During the Holiday Season last December, my family went to Kauai, Hawaii to visit my hubby’s family for Christmas.
To help my Sister-in-law (SIL) especially we rented a condo to stay so that my mother-in-law (MIL) would be able to stay with us for almost a week so that she and her hubby, my brother-in-law (BIL), could get some time off and be by themselves while we had my MIL stay with us at the rented condo. They are the primary caregivers of taking care of my MIL. So getting free time to do what they want to do whenever they want to do is not something that happens much at all.
I was able to rent a “Accessibility Friendly” 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo for the 5 of us to stay together comfortably.
This condo had the kitchen counters & sink at wheelchair height. One of the bathrooms was disability friendly.
The shower bath tub combination had a fold down bench to sit so a person can bathe themselves independently without any assistance. The shower head was a hand held shower head that can easily slide up and down for easy access and there were plenty of railings or bars so that a person who may not be steady to stand by himself/ herself can get into the tub and sit comfortably by oneself.
No matter who you are and at what age, I believe adults want to do things for himself or herself as part of being independent and living with dignity.
My MIL loved this tub and the condo itself because she felt safe and comfortable bathing by herself and having the control of hot and cold water. She didn’t need to ask us to help her. She could walk into this bathroom with both using her cane and her walker.
My Local Guides Review of this condo and the condo resort itself can be found here.
I would easily rent this ground floor condo again and highly recommend staying here in general. The location is perfect for us too.
My MIL was able to use her walker to walk to the condo from our rental minivan. The condo itself had plenty of open space to move around and including in this huge bathroom.
A photo don’t need to be beautiful, @KarenVChin but full of meaning. My mom is using a walker too, so your photo is full of meaning for me.
I had to transform completely her bathroom, adding handle, modifying the shower to make it larger, with a foldable seat inside, fixed on the wall. I fully understand the importance for a disabled to rent a place like that one. Good choice
Hello @ShafiulB , thanks for taking this great initiative. Hopefully, all fellow Local Guides will share their best accessibility photos with us. My best picture is given below:
Dear @KarenVChin , what a lovely story and highly appreciating your helping heart and planning in advance.
Yes, the disable people ( we call them differently able, recently adopted in Tamilnadu) don’t like someone getting pity on them and mostly wanted to help by themselves.
So our responsibility is to facilitate their needs.
@ErmesT You are right and thanks for your addition about @KarenVChin photo. These jobs for our old parents and child’s are highly recommended but I can’t see these properly. I am so lucky that I
@ShahMdSultan Thanks for your joining and posting this Accessible washroom photograph. Looking so beautiful that red color Accessibility logo over the basin.
@JohnPeter Your photo is with a nice ramp which is tactile paved way too. Thanks for your submission.
