A year in review, my 2023 as a Local Guide

2023 ends today and it’s time to take stock. How did my 2023 as a Local Guide go? In many ways I could say that it was an incredible year, a year that brought surprises and many meetings.

Jan 2, 2023

2023 began with a Big Bang, and the surprise visit of a friend who arrived, as he likes to say, from a country at the End of the World: @FaridTDF .

Dec 30, 2023

The year ended with the visit, again a surprise, from @uavalentine , who arrived in Treviso just yesterday to spend a few hours together.

There are a lot of different things between the two dates, which I have tried to summarize in the cover photo of this post.

Travel, snow, mapping, food, contributions in Maps, meetings, stories, exploration, but above all unshakable friendship, as those four hands intertwined in the center of the photo are intended to symbolize. Four hands and four orange rope bracelets, which alone can tell a story.

A Year in Meeting

In 2023 I had many meetings with Local Guides from other countries. In addition to those already mentioned with Farid and Valentine, @Stella2 and @YuliiaZa also passed through Treviso. In April 2023, Stanley arrived, who radically changed my way of describing the world (if you haven’t read his posts, let me know), and in October I attended the Moderators’ meeting in Tokyo.

I’m sure that in 2024 I will have a lot to write about this. Some posts are in preparation and are just waiting for time to be completed and published

A Year in Food

Trying new foods, and above all publishing our gastronomic experiences in Maps is one of the things that Local Guides love most. Of course this is also the case for me, and 2023 has been a fantastic year, during which I have had the opportunity to try many different foods and cuisines. My friend Flat Stanley and I have a lot to tell about this too

A year in Travel

Thanks to Google, and the fantastic moderators meeting in Tokyo, I had a completely unexpected trip this year. A trip that allowed me to get to know Japan. A special thank you to @KarenVChin and her excellent organization, which allowed me to spend an absolutely incredible two weeks. I traveled in all possible ways: Plane, subway, Bullet Train, local trains; Taxi; cableway; funicular; ship. I haven’t posted much so far, but expect a very active 2024.

A year in Mapping

As a Local Guide my contributions to Google Maps this year have been far beyond what I expected. More than 14 thousand streets added in Maps from April to today, and an increase in photo views which will lead me to exceed the 100 million views threshold at the next update of the counts

Happy New year

With this post, while it is almost midnight in Italy, I want to wish everyone a happy New Year, and a fantastic 2024 that will lead us to new and surprising goals.

And you, how was your 2023?

What plans do you have for 2024?

Thanks for this great year in review dear @ErmesT

You had amazing times as a Local Guide and moderator in 2023 and it is so valuable that you shared a lot about your experiences during the year.

We all learn from you and enjoy from the content you share. This is a blessing to have even more in 2024.

Thank you so much and Happy New Year.

What a year @ErmesT . I challenge any other Flat Stanley to post such an epic recap!

I’d say that 2023 was a pretty year for the Just Jake crew. I got to show the Just Littles snow for the first time, as Arizona had a magnificently wet late winter. I was subsequently pummelled by snowballs.

Thanks to the wet winter, we had a Superbloom in the desert. It was an incredible sight to be seen, and I believe you and I shared photos as it was occuring.

Dancing in the Superbloom

As it warmed up and dried out, the local Vespa Clubs started getting prepared for the National Amerivespa Meetup in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. For the first time since COVID, we were having rides leading up to the big event in May. And what an epic trip that was, being able to ride to the Grand Canyon with Vespa fans from all over the US.

Unfortunately, this was the last real fun for the year, as I had to move my business into a new office. It took many months of planning, coordination, and heavy lifting to transfer 20+ years of stuff from our home base into a brand-new office. In the end, it’s been fantastic, but it cut short my year and caused a great amount of stress.

In the middle of it, thought, I had a “milestone” 40th birthday. My staff surprised me by all dressing up as me and gifting me with a lot of new hats (covering my growing forehead has come with age). It was a fun break and a reminder to slow down and recognize how wonderfully fortunate I am for the people I have in my offline life.

As for Mapping - I finally hit level 9, broke through 1,000 new roads & now over 3,000, got deeper into the Top 100 Leaderboard crew & the TRAC Team, became a Roader, and got to know quite a few LGs a lot better. My global network is growing and it has been great.

Nobody has come to visit Arizona, but I hope that in 2024 I will finally get invited to hike with my fellow 2022 Guiding Star and Arizona LG, @AZ_2021 (that’s a call-out!).

Happy New Year to you, @ErmesT . I wish you many more travels and Flat Stanley adventures!

A vibrant year, @ErmesT ! May the new 2024 be also full of fantastic experience, warm meetings, and new contributions! And may circumstances be favourable!

For me, 2023 was a revival and rediscovery as a Local Guide. You’ve read my posts about using Google Maps in the wartime, resumption of map functions in 2023, and the value of the LG community. That’s the summary of my LG 2023. I can only add that I continue actively contributing and get keen on adding videos.

In 2024, I hope to meet other LGs in person and of course spend some time with those whom I was lucky to see in 2023.

Hugs from the cellar :purple_heart:

Thank you, @Amiran , I am trying, like you, to do my best in trying to help.

Why be a community if we don’t help each other?

I don’t think keeping what we learn just to ourselves is useful, especially because we all contribute to improving a tool that we all use, so the improvements that each of us makes become improvements that are useful to all of us.

My hope for 2024 is to be able to continue learning, and therefore to be able to share more experiences.

I wish you a wonderful 2024

Thanks @ErmesT for posting such a great content. This post is also to be considered as a Guiding Post for many LGs about how to summarize and convey the intent of being Local Guides.

I thoroghly enjoyed reading this post and offcourse one of the key attractions undoubtedly is Flat Stanley.

Paolo.

Oh my gosh, @JustJake , this reply deserves a stand alone post.

Well, a lot of things in your year and in your life.

I love the gif of the superbloom in the desert, this is something I want to see once in my life.

The superbloom here on the Alps will happens in a few months. The temperature of December was incredibly high, with just a bit of snow tha lasted only for a few days.

Transfering 20 years of life from one location to another is a titanic activity, but it gives new life and energy to your activity. Well done.

Hehe, nice hats indeed.

55 years ago (I was :sunglasses: dad bought a red Vespa 125 Primavera, so I can growth with a Vespa at home.

I’m sure you and @AZ_2021 will meet this year. Please tag me in your post when it will happen

Was that a polite way of telling me to get off your post @ErmesT :joy: . I thought you were starting us on a mission to post 2023 recaps!

California gets the most epic superblooms. @jayasimha78 could probably organize an entire itinerary for you. Arizona’s Spring is very unpredictable, and we’ve not gotten enough rain this season, so I’m not expecting a repeat of last year. It’s a short-lived phenomenon in the desert, but absolutely incredible when it comes.

Once our little ones reach an age that’s bearable for a week or more by their grandparents, my wife and I have our eye on a couple of Vespa tour groups through Italy. It’d be a dream to ride in the homeland of the Wasp.

Meeting you is one of the best things that happened to me and Flat Stanley in 2023, @YuliiaZa

I had the possibility to learn more about the beautiful person that you are, and we had five incredible days together.

Next time I hope it will be longer

I wish you a 2024 full of happiness

I would love to hear your thoughts and inputs!

Happy New Year! Have a great year ahead!

Thank you and Best Regards!

@ErmesT Wonderful fun post! Great idea for the collages broken down by category to show highlights form last year, and your “year in food” collage made me hungry. I love how you were able to meet so many different Local Guides and attend meetups.

Speaking of meeting up and @JustJake 's funny callout  :sparkling_heart: - it reminded me Tushar (one of the Moderators) mentioned possibly being in Arizona in March- so maybe there can be an in person meet up then for the all the Arizona Local Guides like @JustJake and @AnithaM . :cactus: …and this hermit crab (me) will have to come out from hiding too lol.

…And @JustJake my neighbor, I love reading your year in review comment too!. It was nice to see photos of you having fun with your family. The Vespa ride photo reminds me of the Pixar movie Luca (where I first learned about Vespas). The super bloom also looks so colorful. I recall in the spring a lot of cars were stopped along the highway to take photos.

That office photo of how they all twinned with your outfit looks fun! :sparkling_heart: Reminds me of once where we pranked our manager in a team meeting on Zoom by changing our Zoom photos to his photo.
