A Wild Fruit & A Father’s Memory – Trincomalee Whispers
![]()
While exploring the calm and green outskirts of Trincomalee, my daughter and I came across a tree that caught our attention. Beneath its shade, we found a humble, sticky fruit called “Naruvili” (நறுவிலி)– also known locally as மூக்கு சளி பழம். ![]()

At first glance, it looked strange – soft, jelly-like, and glistening in the sunlight.
But when we tasted it… oh my, what a surprise! ![]()
To take it a step further, we tried something truly village-style:
We mixed the naruvili fruit with raw woodapple, added a pinch of salt and roasted chili powder and crushed it all together.
The result?
A spicy-sour herbal explosion in the mouth —
simple, raw, and deeply satisfying!
