A weekend filled with delicious Indomie - Indonesian instant fried noodles

My locality and district around Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, has just started another round of limited movement control due to Covid-19. I am not being able to travel far, yet yearning to eat something warming memorable. Then I read this wonderful post from @AngieYC about her 2 favorite food from Indonesia (link here). I also have fond memories of Indomie, as it was like the defacto stardard in the olden days for instant mi goreng (fried noodles). I haven’t had it for a long time, so after some nearby hunting, I was able to source 6 different flavors!

[Photo above] I had a plan to wanting to try all 6 flavors in 1 weekend. Each packet costs about USD 0.40, so all in all, it wasn’t costly at only a total of USD 2.50 for all 6 packets. Of course instant noodles won’t have much condiments inside, so I have also to prepare some vegetables, fried egg, meat, etc to accompany the noodles.

Want to know how they taste like? Read on.

[Photo above] - I managed to prepare all 6 flavors to eat between 3 meals in a single day. And I had prepared extra condiments to go with the noodles. Suffice to say, all were delicious.

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Original Flavor (Perisa Asli). This is the original flavor that made Indomie so famous and sought after many years ago. It has the distinct flavor of thick dark soy sauce, and a separate pack of chili powder for those who was a bit more spice. This is a good option if one doesn’t like spicy food. The traditional way to to top with some boiled mustard greens, a sunny side up fried egg, and some deep fried shallots. Amazing memory came back to me when eating this.

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Special Flavor (Perisa Special). This is just like the original flavor but updated possibly for the younger generation. It has some dried preserved vegetables, and a pack of chili sauce instead of chili powder and taste great too. Between this and the original flavor, I would say the original flavor taste more “original”

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Green Chili Flavor (Perisa Cili Hijau). Now this one is a bit unique and has green color chili oil, and taste a tad more spicy. After mixing up everything, the noodles actually looks a bit green in color. It has a fresh taste of green chili. Again, I had eaten it with a fried egg, some boiled mustard greens and deep fried shallots.

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Barbeque Chicken Flavor. At this point of time, after eating so much noodles, I thought although each flavor has some subtle differences, it’s not too different. The Barbeque chicken flavor taste alright. I don’t particularly get the BBQ or chicken flavor, however, it wasn’t bad at all. I would imagine there was some chicken stock powder in the flavoring.

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Aceh. Now this one is a totally different experience. And I like this one. First the noodles is much thicker and took a tad longer time to cook. And the noodles are more chewy and textured vs the others. And it comes with a big pack of dark red chilly oil, which I felt makes it the most spicy among the 6 that I bought. So, if you like chewy and spicy noodles, I would recommend this one. Aceh is a province in north Sumatra island in Indonesia. *Recommended

[Photo above] - Indomie Mi Goreng Soto Flavor (Perisa Soto). This is also a very memorable flavor. Soto is a traditional Indonesian soup / broth dish which is very warming and hearty. And this noodles has a little bit of sourness or lime flavor on top. Which makes it quite enjoyable. Not spicy at all.

So, after spending a weekend eating so much instant noodles, and I do feel bloated. I guess my advice is eat this once in a while if one is craving for it. Too much instant noodles is apparently not good for health, so eat sparingly.

My recommended one

For the original flavor: Try the Original flavor pack

For spicy: Try the Aceh noodles

For uniqueness: Try the Soto flavor noodles

All are delicious though.

@StephenAbraham Nice one!! I also like the original flavour as that was what I ate growing up! It’s definitely interesting to see all the different flavours that are available now. I must try to find all the ones you’ve mentioned and give them a go. I don’t eat very often though and I they usually come sold in packs so it will be a while before I can rotate through all of them! Considering the numerous flavours available, Indomie should do a ‘taster’ pack containing different flavours :joy:

@AdrianLunsong Definitely all companies need to do taster packs. Most of us don’t mind a small premium just to try out all the flavors. :grinning:

Hei @StephenAbraham ,

Wow, thank you for sharing this post, now this is a real hunt to find the best flavor!

I was thinking to go and make Indomie right after reading your post. From all of the flavors you shared, there’s only one flavor that I never tried which is the Barbeque Chicken or they just named it differently in other country.

@StephenAbraham Very nice review and presentation of Indomie Noodles :+1: Thanks for sharing with us.

It’s so good to know that Indomie receives so much love from Malaysia. But as you said, too much instant noodles is not good for health. Although it’s very tasty, but it is not considered as very healthy because of its MSG content in the seasoning.

Thanks for bringing me to this post @StephenAbraham

You’re so amazing to spend your weekend with instant noodles, but please don’t do it again because eating too much instant noodle won’t bring good benefit to your health.

From the six flavors above, I’m not familiar with the original flavor because I grow up knowing that the special flavor is the original one :joy:

Besides Indomie, I’m also a fan of Korean instant noodle, such as the one with kimchi flavor. If you’re a cheese lovers, do try Ottogi Cheese Ramen

Hey mate @PaulPavlinovich check out this post from Steve about Indomie. Have you tried the flavors above?
