A Visit to Jakarta Aquarium

Hello Local Guides

Have you ever wondered why so many doctor’s offices and health clinics all over the world have fish tanks in their waiting rooms? This is not just by chance. Research shows that watching fish for a period of time can bring health benefits, such as reducing stress, reducing blood pressure and heart rate, and improving focus and creativity.

So, as a part of #monthlytopic, I will share my experience at Jakarta Aquarium, which I consider as a quiet and relaxing place in the middle of busy city.

Jakarta Aquarium is located inside Neo Soho, a shopping mall in West Jakarta. It is the second public aquarium in Jakarta that was opened in 2017, so it is quite a new attraction. It is not very big compared to the old one, Sea World Ancol, but it is really well designed and left us really impressed.

Jakarta Aquarium is divided into two floors with different themes in each area. On the upper floor, we will step into a maritime adventure that features Indonesia’s biodiversity in small fish tanks, digital displays and video mapping. We can even touch some of them at the touch pool area.

From a common looking sea aquariums with lots of beautiful small fish and coral reefs, we are guided to the bigger and more exotic sea creatures in one floor below, where the main tank is located. The main tank contains various fish, mostly the big ones like sharks, stingrays, and grouper.

One of the highlights of the main tank is the unique underwater theater performance inspired by Indonesian folklore called “Pearl of the South Sea”. It is a story of a beautiful princess who is cursed by her wicked stepmother into an ugly daughter. She finds solace by living in the sea and turning into a beautiful mermaid. Then, she helps her father to defeat the wicked queen who wants to take control the kingdom.

Tips for visiting Jakarta Aquarium

  1. For a better aquarium experience, avoid visiting on weekend and public holiday as it will get more crowded.

  2. Please wash your hands before and after touching the sea animals at the touch pool area.

  3. Another fun experience in Jakarta Aquarium that you’d better not skip is the 5D theater, where you can experience a deep sea research in a submarine! Make sure to buy the premium ticket for this access.

Have you been to a public aquarium? Or perhaps, do you have a fish tank in your house? Please share your stories in comments below.

@Lusianaa very interesting. The first aquarium I visited is Sydney Aquarium. I don’t remember the detail because it was like 5 years ago but seeing yours just reminded me of it!

Sure I will add some picture in there @Lusianaa

Thanks @Sophia_Cambodia Ah Sydney  definitely on my bucket list. How long have you lived in Sydney, Sophia?

@Lusianaa nah, I just visited few days there in 2015. After that, I left for Melbourne and returned back to New Zealand.

Oh, sorry @Sophia_Cambodia I remembered your post about Sydney and thought you have lived there. You are now in Cambodia, right? Do you plan to return back to NZ?

If there are good chances, yes I will go back and visit the country again even I had visited many of them. I really want to see this paradise again here, as I posted earlier.

Wow…! I wasn’t aware the fish tank has psychological benefits though I agree I felt good gazing at the fish swimming happily - we had several fish pots of various sizes in our home over the years.

I like those huge fish tanks in the aquariums @Lusianaa but we do not have such anywhere in India yet that I know of.

@Lusianaa Come on, an aquarium can’t be a quiet place, never! Wkwkwk. OK, I agree that watching fish can reduce stress. :slightly_smiling_face: This post reminds me of Georgia Aquarium I visited in 2008. Did you touch any fish?

Hi @TusharSuradkar

Thank you for your comment. What kind of fish did you take care at home? We have a small koi fish pond now. It is believed that keeping them can bring good fortune

Oh, I see. Btw, you traveled a lot to US. Have you, by any chance been to a public aquarium in there?

Hahaha you can’t disagree anymore @Ant_Bad_Yogi because the leader of #monthlytopic project has approved it as a quiet place, too. Right, Mr @HiroyukiTakisawa ?  Umm well, it’s all about timing I guess (you’d better avoid weekend and public holiday)

Whoa! So it was 12 years ago. Where is it? Do you still remember the experience? Unfortunately, I didn’t dare to touch them :joy:

Hi @Lusianaa

I think it is just a basic Golden fish which in fact appears more like an orange color fish that is so common to keep at home out here in India and also for the same reason that it could bring good charm.

And you are spot on about the aquariums in the US - there is literally at least one in each major town but are exorbitantly charged [erhaps because of the huge upkeep costs. Hence I have given them a skip so far as I have always traveled on a budget and a highly-priced aquarium could never get into my bucket list
