In mid-October 2021, me and my fellow Bali Local Guides held a photo walk by visiting a unique cemetary in Bali.

History and Rituals
The Bali Island does not only offer the charm of beautiful and exotic natural tourism. But there are also very interesting and unique cultures. My trip to Bali still leaves many stories. One of them is the story of a trip to the Terunyan Cemetery in Trunyan village. Trunyan is a village located in the Geotourism area of Mount Batur, Kintamani, Bali.

Back when I was in school studying history lesson , there was a term procession or cremation ritual performed by Balinese Hindus called Ngaben.
Well, specifically in Trunyan village there is no Ngaben procession taking place in that village.
One of the unique cultural traditions that I found here is the funeral tradition by not burying the bodies, but by placing the bodies in a row and equipped with a cover in the form of woven bamboo in the shape of an isosceles triangle on each body.

We visited on sunny day, my first impression once step onto Terunyan Cemetary , I felt nervous and little bit scary but interesting. Surprisingly, I never noticed any bad smell in Trunyan cemetery.
It is said that there is a tree called Taru Menyan which is able to neutralize and eliminate the stench emitted by the corpses. This Taru Menyan tree became the forerunner of the name Trunyan Village.

HOW TO GETTING THERE
To access the Terunyan cemetery area only by using a boat. on one occasion I went there, me and my fellow Bali Local Guides took a boat from the pier in the village of Kedisan across the exotic Lake Batur by traveling a distance of approximately 15-20 minutes at a cost of Rp.750,000 per one boat/group. One boat contains up to 7 persons.
While at the cemetary are there are terms and conditions that are applied. Such as not being allowed to say dirty or dirty words, not being allowed to bring home any objects from the cemetary area.
So what are you waiting for? if you are curious and want to visit there. Don’t forget to invite Bali Local Guides to accompany you. Thank you my fellow Bali Local Guides for taking me here.
