Warri is one of the biggest cities in Delta State. It is the center of Oil in Nigeria and has so many beaches and water sides. You see more of white or Beach sands in Warri. As a traveler, I didn’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity. So, I journeyed to Delta State on 9th August.
On departing from Awka, I went to Asaba which is the Capital of Delta state. I saw the lovely bridges and roundabouts in Asaba. The most interesting roundabout was the roundabout called ‘Traffic roundabout’ and the fly over bridge opposite the Shoprite Asaba Mall. You really don’t want to miss this place!
Of course, I wanted to have a feel of the Shoprite. So, I took my lunch at Shoprite. You may be wondering if I went alone. But the answer is No. I went with my girlfriend, Chioma Nnagbo, who remained my tour guide too. It was an exciting moment at Asaba. I spent few hours at Asaba before boarding a bus to Warri which was my destination. Warri is about 3 hours from Asaba. It’s quite a long journey not because of the kilometers but because I was only left to see the trees and of course enjoy some portions of gallops because of the bad roads.
I arrived Warri around 7PM in the evening. On arriving, I visited the Jubilee Hotel (Retreat and Conference Center). It was really a big hotel worth millions of naira. The hotel is situated in the same compound with the Holy Martyrs of Uganda Seminary, Bishop’s Court Chancery of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Enerhe, Warri, Delta State. So, my new friend, Fr. Damian and Yoma drove us home because of the low level of security in Warri. I couldn’t risk my cameras. My review on Jubilee Hotel, please click the link here: https://goo.gl/maps/SngwCeddq1N2
The next day (10th August) of course meant business by 10 am. I couldn’t miss to see how their market looks like. So I followed my friend’s mum to the market to buy things for stew and Egusi soup. There, I noticed the market wasn’t added in the market, so I added the market ‘Igbudu Market ‘on the map which happens to be the biggest in Warri. Thanks to the Google team who didn’t waste time in approving my addition. I couldn’t go round the market because it was raining heavily. After the market, I went to see some clients and made new friends. After my business meetings which didn’t take long, I journeyed to Genesis Cinema in Shoprite Delta Mall to watch a movie called ‘Island’. It was really motivating to see a well directed and thrilled movie. I needed some rest, so I journeyed back home to catch some rest. At evening, I was introduced to a special local meal often described by Nigerians as a food eaten by the ‘Aje Kpakos. It is a food supposedly meant for the poor or average people. This time around I was introduced to ‘soaked garri with fried fish’ unlike Garri and chopped coconut or groundnut with cold water which I was used to. It tasted better and sweeter. That was my dinner for Friday. You may be wondering if I had stomach upset. Yes I did. I had a bloating stomach after consuming my local dish. That’s sounds funny but interesting to me. I enjoyed every local and tit bits of my experience in Warri. No regrets at all. Please check out my review on Shoprite Delta Mall here https://goo.gl/maps/nsftQEEmNo82
On Saturday, 11th August, 2018, I went to Jubilee Hotel to round off my business deal. After that, I went to Shoprite to take Vanilla Ice Cream with flakes. It was so sweet just like Cold Stone in Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja.
After I left Shoprite, I took a tour to Osubi Airport. We were told that Osubi Airport had Commercial flight and Contractor’s Flight which takes oil company workers to their place of work.
From Osubi Airport, we went to main market to see the water side in Ogbe Ijaw Market. Ogbe Ijaw Market, Ibo Market and Main Market are all within the same location. Ogbe Ijaw Market is mainly known for fish selling. At Main Market, I ate one of their local dish called ‘Banga and Starch’ it was my first time so it wasn’t yummy. I also ate roasted maggot. You ought to see how my face was at first when I started consuming it. It was my first time also.
After I left Main Market, I went to Ibo market popularly dominated by the Ibos. On my way to Ibo market, we passed through Sacred Heart Cathedral at Okere Roundabout. Please check out my review on Sacred Heart Cathedral here: https://goo.gl/maps/S8NVaJEUrjH2
Ibo market is a place to buy clothes, shoes, wrist watch and bag. I got myself a wrist watch and a shirt there. Please check out my review on Ibo market here: https://goo.gl/maps/NvNWvZJwvTx
On returning home, I was drained by the rain. Later in the evening, we went ate ‘kpokpo garri’. Kpokpo garri is crunchy and it is usually taken with groundnut. We also bought fried yam specially made with egg and used it as our dinner. It was nice tasting local things.
In fact one of the things I enjoyed most in Warri during my stay was the mosquitoes that welcomed me so well and used me for their daily feast. They were great companions throughout the night as they couldn’t stop whispering on my ear.
I couldn’t attend 6.30am Mass on Sunday (12th August). I needed more rest. So when I woke up, I prepared for my journey back to Awka. I took breakfast and then met Nonso who is the elder brother to Chioma. I boarded a bus and then journeyed back to Awka.
That’s the end of my trip to Warri. Thanks for your time. Happy weekend Local guides. Love from Awka, Nigeria
