A TRIP TO MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE OF NIGERIA

Maiduguri is the capital city of Borno State located in the Northeastern part of Nigeria. All my life (95%) is in Northeastern part of the country, specifically in Bauchi State but I have never been to Maiduguri until recently when I embarked on a trip there to collect some data for one of my academic research works.

The journey was around 7hours by public bus from Bauchi, and we passed through Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State. I was so excited because that was my first time to see those angles of the country, as you know I love traveling and exploring new places and cultures. On the road there were many security checkpoints due to the volatile nature of that area.

This particular state shares border with 3 different countries namely; Chad Republic, Cameroon and Republic of Niger. Maiduguri used to be a vibrant city as I was told by my childhood friends who attended University of Maiduguri. It was also a large business hub for both domestic and international markets. It was actually the second largest commercial city in the North of Nigeria after Kano State. However, the insecurity issues started around 2010 devastated everything but now the situation is very good and resilient.

In the city, motorcycles are strictly prohibited, you must either use your private car, private bicycle or use public tricycle (Keke-Napep) to go round the city. The people there are so friendly and accommodating. I also love their culture; they preserved it and always proud of it. They mostly speak their native language which is Kanuri.

Their traditional food is yummy but kinda weird to me due to its concoction. I pray for my dear Nigeria and the world to be in peace, love, progress and tranquility, amen.

Hello @Dr_Mohh ,

Thank you for sharing your great adventure with us. The mosque is very beautiful and back where I’m from in Indonesia we have similar public transportation, but it seems like there’s not much traffic.

In addition to that I am changing your topic label to the travel topic.

Thank you @Zainabzy

That was my motivation for the post actually, many people use to have negative thoughts when they hear the name Maiduguri.

Dear** @AngieYC **

Thank you for the comment. Yeah, there wasn’t much traffic. Regarding similarity of the public transportation with your hometown in Indonesia, yeah many Asian countries especially the Asia Pacific and India have similar public transportation with Nigeria, Africa.

Thank you
