My Appreciation for Reactions on Connect
Hello fellow Local Guides,
As I was scrolling through Connect this evening here in Phnom Penh, I was thinking about a small feature of this platform that I believe has a huge impact: the reaction emojis on our posts and comments.
At first glance, a ‘Like’, a ‘Heart’, or a ‘Celebrate’ icon might seem like a minor detail. It’s not a long, thoughtful comment or a detailed story. It’s just a simple click. In a way, you could say it’s not really necessary.
But then I thought about what it feels like when people react to my posts. After spending time taking photos, writing down my thoughts, and sharing a piece of my world, seeing those little icons appear is a wonderful feeling. It’s a quiet, digital nod from across the globe. It’s an acknowledgement that says, “Hey, I saw this, and I appreciate you sharing it.” It makes you feel like your contribution was seen and valued by the community.
And it works both ways. Sometimes I’m reading a post late at night and don’t have the energy to write a full comment, but I’m so impressed by someone’s photos or helpful review. Leaving a reaction is the perfect way to send a quick message of support and encouragement.
In a way, it mirrors our experience on Google Maps itself. When someone ‘likes’ one of our photos or marks a review as helpful, it’s a small but powerful signal of appreciation that encourages us to contribute. Since we already have these reactions on Maps, it feels even more essential to have them here on Connect, the platform where we gather to connect on a deeper level.
So, while they may not be “necessary” for the site to function, I believe these reactions are a vital part of our community’s spirit. They are the unspoken language that makes this big global platform feel a little smaller and a lot more connected.
What do you all think? Do you also feel that these simple reactions make a big difference in how we connect with each other here?
