If you’ve ever felt the need to press the “pause” button on life, I think I’ve found the perfect place. On my recent trip to the Almora region in Uttarakhand, I stumbled upon Matena Village, and it was one of the most rejuvenating experiences I’ve had in a long time.
While everyone talks about the spiritual vibes of nearby Kasar Devi, Matena feels like its quiet, meditative counterpart. It’s a place where the only “noise” you hear is the wind rustling through pine and oak forests.
Why Matena is Unique
What makes this village special isn’t a single “tourist attraction”—it’s the atmosphere.
The “Slow Life” Experience: Unlike the busy towns, Matena is still relatively untouched. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to walk through terraced fields, watch the sun set over the Himalayas without a crowd, or just practice some quiet reflection.
Proximity to Kasar Devi: You get the best of both worlds here. You are close enough to visit the famous Kasar Devi temple (known for its unique geomagnetic field and rich history of seekers and artists) but far enough away to enjoy absolute silence at night.
The Authentic Kumaoni Vibe: Walking through the village paths, you really get to see the local way of life. The architecture, the warm smiles of the villagers, and the crisp mountain air make it feel like a step back in time.
Matena is surprisingly accessible, making it a great day trip or a base for a few days of peace:
Base: Almora is your main transit hub.
From Almora: It’s roughly a 10–12 km drive. You can easily hire a local taxi or take a shared jeep heading toward Kasar Devi.
The Last Mile: Once you reach the Kasar Devi area, the road leading into Matena is motorable, making it convenient even if you have luggage or are driving your own vehicle.

If you visit, don’t rush. The magic of Matena is in the “doing nothing.” Grab a book, find a spot overlooking the valley, and just soak in the view. If you’re into photography, the soft mountain light in the morning is absolutely dreamlike for capturing the village life and local flora.
