I have always loved the Arts especially ‘Performing Arts’; movies, Stage Plays, recited Poetry, Dance, etc. especially when it has a tinge of culture infused in it.
There are many places in Lagos, Nigeria to immerse yourself in these Performing Arts, with Lagos, being not only the Commercial Nerve centre of our dear Country but also the Major Entertainment Hub.
One such place I love to visit and which I strongly recommend is Terra Kulture.
I love Terra for many reasons, among which are;
- Theatre at Terra -Every week, there is a play staged at the Theatre where you can feel your veins Pulsate with every beat and rhythm coming from the stage
- The Souvenir/Book shop: Here, you can get many books, that will tell you about our rich History, Arts, People and culture. What’s more? You can get custom-made souvenirs donned in our traditional fabric which we call; ‘Ankara’ (which you call Wax Print), custom-made dolls in our Traditional attires. I hope you know we have over 500 ethnic groups here and speak over 500 languages. Well, now you know.
- Completely Accessible for people living with disabilities: This is one of the very few places that is an entertainment hub, that is privately owned , that is completely wheelchair-accessible
! Like, if someone on a wheelchair decides to sit right up in the Gallery, there is a beautiful Ramp that goes from the ground floor through the African restaurant to the Gallery of the theatre. This is not to even touch on how they deliberately employ people living with disabilities (this is a huge challenge in Nigeria). Everyone is welcome, everyone gets a fair treatment at Terra - The beautiful Lounge - If you have come to Terra with someone who would rather not be in the Theatre, in the Bookshop, or in the African restaurant, then there is a beautiful lounge. Actually two, one where, they play Table Tennis, the other where you can take photos upon photos upon selfies till you forget yourself.
Not quite, but I am sure you know what I mean.
Terra Kulture is impeccable!
While I have been at Terra several times, the one time I can never forget was the time I took my Mum to see Moremi-the-Musical.Stage Play.
Moremi was a Wartime Heroine who delivered her people from the hands of evil warriors who were plundering her people. As a price for her victory, she had to give away her most priced possessions; especially, her son, among many other things. She is widely celebrated across Nigeria with many monuments erected in her honour.
It was only suiting that I take my own Heroine to see Moremi. She was dressed even like Moremi.
If you watch this video, that’s my mother’s voice in the background saying; “Be a Strong woman”.
It was a treat I gave her, as she rarely takes out time to enjoy herself. She was dressed even likeMoremi. ![]()
I shared these clips and told the Story of Moremi and the ultimate sacrifice she had to pay during the M.A.C.C.A.-4 Meetup.
- Have you or do you feel like you have met someone like Moremi? A Moremi Ajasoro?
- Have you been so immersed in something you are watching that you felt like you experienced it?
If your answer is ‘No’, then you need to switch from watching movies in cinemas to watching Stage plays
BUT, on a more serious note, if you had a choice, what would you choose?
- A Movie at a Cinema? Or
- A stage Play?
