A Local Guide’s View of Chitkul, Kinnaur

Hello, Local Guides!

I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Chitkul in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Often referred to as the “last village of India,” it sits at an impressive altitude and offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Himalayas. I wanted to share a bit about my experience exploring this beautiful region, capturing the landscape, and updating Maps along the way.

The Journey and the Landscape The drive through the Kinnaur valley is an adventure in itself, but arriving in Chitkul feels like stepping into another world.

The village is nestled on the banks of the Baspa River, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. I spent my time trekking through the area, taking in the crisp mountain air, and photographing the incredible wooden architecture that reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Mapping the Last Village As a Local Guide, I couldn’t resist contributing to the map while I was there. High-altitude, remote locations like this can always benefit from updated information.

  • Photos: I uploaded several photos of the valley and the iconic “Hindustan ka Aakhri Dhaba” (The Last Dhaba of India) to help future travellers know what to expect.

  • Reviews & Updates: I made sure to add fresh reviews for the local eateries and homestays, noting important details like road conditions, mobile network availability, and accessibility, which are crucial for anyone planning a trip up here.

Visiting Chitkul was an unforgettable experience that combined my love for high-altitude trekking, photography, and mapping. If you ever find yourself in Himachal Pradesh, this is a destination you absolutely cannot miss.

How to Reach from Delhi - Chitkul is 650 kms from Delhi and there are no premium buses for Chitkul from Delhi , you will have to reach Shimla and then take local bus to Chitkul (its a 10hr Journey from Shimla)

Have any of you visited the Kinnaur region, or do you have a favorite remote village you’ve mapped? Let me know in the comments!

Your post on Chitkul in Kinnaur is beautifully written and truly engaging. It brings out the charm of what feels like a hidden gem in Himachal Pradesh, and your storytelling makes the place come alive. The photographs are especially striking, each one captures the essence of the landscape so vividly that it draws the reader in and makes them want to experience it firsthand.

I was particularly touched by your line about contributing to the map as a Local Guide while you were there. That spirit of giving back, even while traveling, is what makes the community so special. It perfectly reflects a mindset I deeply relate to, once a Local Guide, always a Local Guide. Your post is not just informative but also inspiring, reminding all of us why we started contributing in the first place.

@Manishhh Your post is beautifully narrated :tulip:and complemented by lovely photographs :star_struck: .
The photographs of lovely Chitkul draws your attention and makes you want to visit :heart_suit:
However, reaching there seems a bit challenging , a 10hour drive can feel quite exhausting unless we plan a halt along the way.

Perhaps the best idea would be to visit together as a group after all, in good company, even long journeys feel easier and more enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful post and virtually introducing us with Chitkul :handshake:
