Hi dear LocalGuides!
Today I want to take you to the mountains to discover a small gem, or rather, a small emerald (given its colors!) located in South Tyrol: Lake Carezza!
This small but beautiful lake is located in the middle of the Alps, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Latemar and coniferous forests. What makes it magnificent and a popular destination for all tourists are its colors: from intense blue to emerald green in spring-summer, passing through shades of orange in autumn.
We are more than 1500 meters above the sea level and this lake is fed exclusively by underground springs and therefore its width always changes according to the seasons and the amount of rainwater.
The water is therefore pure and transparent,
and does not move the bottom of the lake: this means that almost all the time it has a very smooth surface and therefore perfectly reflects all the colors that surround it!
Along the entire perimeter of the lake there are rest areas and panoramic points where you can comfortably admire the lake and its landscape.
In recent years they have encouraged this tourist destination with the adaptation of a convenient parking, a refreshment area and a practical underground tunnel that allows you to reach the lake in a few minutes.
Unfortunately, this area of the lake was also affected by the 2018 Vaia Storm, which with its winds at more than 120km/h devastated the woods and the landscape of these places, as you can see from this aerial photo taken after the storm:
A this lake is also linked to a legend dear to the local inhabitants, the legend of Ondina, the nymph of Lake Carezza:
“Long ago a splendid nymph lived in Lake Carezza. This sweet creature often sat on the lake shore, braided her blond locks and hummed softly. One day the sorcerer of Masaré heard her angelic voice and fell in love with it. He used all the powers in his possession to conquer the lake fairy, but the nymph never let herself be found. The sorcerer therefore asked the witch Langwerda for help who advised him to disguise himself as a jewelry seller, to spread a rainbow from the Catinaccio to the Latemar and then to go to Lake Carezza to attract the nymph and take her away with him. The sorcerer listened to the witch, but forgot to disguise himself. The nymph was ecstatic in front of the rainbow colored with precious gems. But he soon became aware of the presence of the magician, who was hiding by the lake, and plunged back into the waters of Lake Carezza. Since then no one saw her again. The sorcerer, angry that his plan had not been successful and destroyed by the pains of love, tore the rainbow from the sky, threw it to the ground and threw all the precious stones into the lake. This explains why Lake Carezza still shines today with the wonderful colors of the rainbow and why the Ladins still call it the “Lec de ergobando”, or the Rainbow Lake. "
I hope that one day you will be able to visit it live, here the position on Maps Lago di Carezza
and in the meantime a small video at the end of this discovery!
