Hilsa is the national fish of Bangladesh. It is a marine fish that flies to the river in Bangladesh and eastern India to lay eggs. Hilsa is very popular for Bengalis. Apart from this, the fish are also very popular in Orissa, Tripura and Assam as food for the hilsa. In Bangladesh, about 75 percent of the world’s hilsa is extracted.
In 2017, hilsa fish are recognized as geographical indicators or GI products in Bangladesh.

This is saltwater fish. Usually associated with big rivers and alluvial canals are available during monsoon. During this time the hilsha fish comes from the sea to the big river and the canal connected to the allure. Hilsa fish cannot be cultivated. Fishermen catch fish with rivers and nets with fishing boats. These fish are brought to the coastal ghats. From there it is transported to remote places in the country with ice. Every year from October 12 to November 2, 22 days of all types of hilsa are closed. It is forbidden to hold Jatka (hilsa smaller than 8 inches) for 6 months until June 5th. Hilsa fish are found in the confluence of three rivers in Chandpur district. And Chandpur district is famous for Hilsha. Every year, Bangladesh receives a lot of foreign currency by exporting hilsa fish.
