A Journey by Speed Boat & Taste of Fresh Ilish

It was couple of weeks ago, when I enjoyed a journey by speed boat from Aricha Fery Ghat to Kajeer Haat Launch Ghat. This was my first journey by speed boat. It was amazing. It is really very fast ride. It can cross the entire river by just 20 to 25 minutes, where Fery or Launch take 2 hours same distance. Though it is risky in someways still it is very adventurous. This ride is fully private service and each person have to pay 200 BDT for the river cross journey.

My journey first took me to the government officer’s residence of BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority ) from my working place Gazipur, Dhaka. As my father is a civil service holder here. I have tasted the fresh Hilsa fish, now it’s the period when we restrict to consume, buy, sell or catch this fish from 14th October to next some days. The ilish, also known as the ilisha, hilsa, hilsa herring or hilsa shad, is a species of fish related to the herring, in the family Clupeidae. It is a very popular and sought-after food fish in the Indian Subcontinent.

The most famous hilsh fish comes from Chandpur District, Bangladesh. Ilish is an oily fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Recent experiments have shown its beneficial effects in decreasing cholesterol level in rats and insulin level.

Kajeer Haat Ghat was the middle stand of my journey. It was the other side of speed boat journey. I walk for sometime and eat egg-bread and looked to people and stuffs here and there and started return journey again with another speed boat. each boat takes 10-12 people and boat driver. When the river’s water stream bumps on the back of the boat its a shake according to the size of stream. I thought water is the most easy thing but I have changed my my mind, it’s very rough journey during a tide time of river. This journey took into two rivers Padma and Meghna. There is a joining place of two river. But alas I could not take the picture. In the evening I started to end my journey by return. Overall it’s a beautiful journey with a new experience.

The dish looks very delicious! Next to the herring, are there other kinds of fish?
