A hobby on holiday

I was speaking to my dad the other day and he shared the fact that he is really averse to travelling. So I dug a bit deeper and asked him why? His response. Back in the day a simple trip to the big city is no easy task, especially with a family of 7. It would take him months to plan. He had to plot the route using paper maps, organise accommodation and plan the itinerary. He had to do this using outdated travel books, phone calls or word of mouth. However, I do fondly recall we frequently keep getting lost on these trips. A 2 h2-hour trip can easily take us 3 hours or more. For him travelling is stressful and largely requires a lot of trust that nothing will go wrong.

Fast forward to the current day. I must say how privileged we are now. I travel a lot with my family of four and unlike my dad, I find planning a holiday largely stress free. I can trust that google maps will get me to my destination accurately and on time. The feedback from locals have allowed me to confidently venture to places only locals would know off and without hesitation.

In turn, I enjoy providing feedback about places I have visited. It allows me to be truthful and balanced in my reviews. Intrinsically I know that my unique experiences makes a difference to other travellers. Being able to contribute and provide value give me a sense that I am continuingly helping others.

I read a lot of what others contribute as well. This gives me a better feel and understanding of the places I visit. On top of that, I tend to write a review in a way that ideally have not already been mentioned. That way, I know I am providing additional value. When I am on holiday you can sometimes catch me by the pool or hotel lobby reviewing my trips for the day while planning my next days excursion. It is almost a past time for me and a way of relaxing. Thank you google. You have given me a hobby and a sense of achievement, believe it or not, while on holiday.
