Dear amazing Local Guides! Greetings from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Exploring heritage sites is always a thrilling experience for me, but doing it with individuals who share the same passion enriches the adventure to an entirely different level. As I always like to explore ancient and heritage sites, I had a tremendous opportunity to join a heritage tour in Chandpur district with like-minded people.
Each month, on the last Friday, a group of heritage tourists explores a district of our country. In episode 92, I joined them on the Chandpur Heritage Tour! A heritage tour in Chandpur district was a perfect blend of history, architecture, and camaraderie, as we explored some of the most important heritage sites in this area.
A heritage tour of Chandpur district began at the Chhoto Sundor Masjid. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions and rain, we decided to continue our visit to this mosque. The archaeology directorate is currently preserving the mosque. After clearing the forest in the small village of Rampur Union of Chandpur, a dome mosque from the Sultanate period is visible. It is believed that this structure is 500 years old. Locals shared that, despite numerous elderly people in the area informing them about this ancient structure, no one was willing to visit it. A dense forest encased the exterior of this ancient mosque.
Next, we visited the Alamgiri Masjid. This mosque is located in the Sadar Union of Hajiganj Upazila, Chandpur District. There are five domes in Alamgir Mosque. Four pillars support the mosque’s main structure. Each wall stands approximately 16 feet tall. It is known that the mosque belongs to the Mughal dynasty.
We explored the Shah Suja Masjid, which is a few hundred yards after Alamgir Masjid. Three domes compose the mosque. The dome in the middle is large, and there are two smaller domes on either side. A beautiful dighi is located near this mosque.
Balakhal Chowdhury House is a historical monument. The establishment of this zamindar house is believed to have occurred approximately 100 years ago. The Zamindar Dhirendra Narayan Roy Chowdhury founded the Zamindar House. Chowdhury House occupies a vast expanse of land. The house’s main building has two floors. There is a big pond in front of the house. This house is an important piece of Chandpur’s history. The house is a popular tourist attraction.
Our next destination was Rampur Chowdhury House. This house is about four kilometers from the Balakhal Chowdhury House. Their descendants are still living in this house.
We have completed our Friday Jummah prayers at Hajigonj Boro Masjid (Hajigonj Jame Masjid). This historic mosque is about 20 kilometers from Chandpur district. This beautiful mosque is well-known both in the country and abroad. The mosque’s architectural style and the stunning environment give us peace of mind.
Lohagarh Moth and Lohagarh House
After having our lunch break, we decided to visit Lohagarh Moth and Lohagarh House. The nearly 300-year-old Lohagarh Moth is located on the bank of the Dakatia River in Chandpur district. There were once five moths, but only three remain today. The surviving moths have three different heights. Tourists regard Lohagarh Moth as a popular destination. People always come from far and wide.
We conclude the tour by visiting Rupsa Zamindar Bari and the Rupsa Zamindar Bari Mosque. The Rupsa Zamindar Bari and the Zamindar Bari Mosque are approximately 250 years old. By entering through the main gate of Rupsa Zamindarbari, one can see a decorated mosque. A zamindar family graveyard sits on the south side of the mosque, while a 1906-established madrasa remains on the north side.
The illustrious history of Chandpur district intertwines with the history of Rupsa Zamindar House. If you walk a little along the Zamindar Bari path, you will see the Dighi. One side of the zamindar house’s main building houses the Rupsa Union Land Office. Several other buildings are located behind the main building. The blend of history, culture, and architecture of this manor house was truly mesmerizing.
Our heritage tour in Chandpur district was a wonderful experience, enriched by the company of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for history and culture. Each place we toured provided us with a unique glimpse into the region’s past, and the stories associated with these places added to the additional pleasure of our trip. This heritage tour was not only truly remarkable for Chandpur’s rich heritage but also strengthened our group bond, making it a memorable adventure that we will cherish for years to come.
