A gentle reminder - Google's Free Storage policy is changing - let us get ready - TravellerG

Hello friends,

Through a couple of posts, I am trying to answer the questions I have received from different communities & LGs, regarding the new storage policy of Google. I request other LGs who have more information to share with us, please.

What’s changing & What’s not changing?

Free storage (across Google Photos, Google Drive & Gmail) will remain as 15 GB. But, from June 1, 2021, High quality and Express quality content will start counting towards your 15 GB free Google Account storage. This means that all your contributions (NOT in Google Maps) will be consuming space and once you reach 15 GB, you will not be able to:

  1. Send/Receive Gmails Mails/attachments,

  2. Add Photos or any document.

(Whatever you have saved before 31st May 2021, will be available even after June 1st 2021).

The original quality contents were/are counted & will continue to be counted in the future too.

The link below will give you an idea of storage available, based on your average use: photos.google.com/storage.

The link below gives Google Policy Details regarding Storage:

Very brief & simple Doc - Read this carefully…

Check Your Storage Status  - How your storage is utilised?

https://one.google.com/storage

You need NOT DELETE any photo - instead, change it (explained below) into “High Quality” & retain it. All photos uploaded till May 31, 2021, in High Quality will not be counted against the free 15 GB storage & will be safe in Google, even after June 1st 2021.

How to change “Original Quality to High Quality?”

https://photos.google.com/settings

Using the above LINK, change the setting to “High Quality” (If you are already in High Quality, just leave it as it is - Kindly remember that this may take some time (minutes to hours, depending upon the volume of your storage) to convert all your photos to High Quality - wait patiently.

Important

High-quality photos uploaded till 31st May will be retained by Google, forever. So, upload other needed photos before 31st May.

Kindly do this before May 25th, because, later the servers may become busy.

Note:

Accounts provided by your work, school, family, or other groups, maybe affected - kindly check with the authority/manager of your account.

Hope this will help you. Other questions, I shall answer in the coming post.

Tagging some of the Team Leaders & request them to circulate in your local communities, please.

Let us help all

Thank you very much for the update, that’s very helpful @TravellerG I haven’t received anything like that!

Thank you for the heads-up @TravellerG

Thank you for all the direct links - very useful. I wasn’t aware of all those places, quotas, and settings and how the 15 GB quota was distributed and consumed.

What I found amusing was that the setting for ‘High Quality’ has a description that reads 'at a slightly reduced quality.

So is it high quality or reduced quality?

Thank you for reminding sir.

This post is useful and important to us. Especially who had been actively use Google photos.

Thank you @TravellerG Sir for your reminder post. It will be very helpful for all.

Stay Safe & happy

Happy Guiding!

Thanks for reminding @TravellerG Sir. I have already kept in high quality only. So all my photos will be saved, isn’t it?

Thank you @TravellerG sir for sharing this amazing awareness post… This is quite helpful to all of us… :+1:t2:

Thank you @TravellerG Sir  , for this helpful reminder And heads-up regarding storage policy. Was almost starting deleting some photos . Thanks to local guides community that am learning and getting more knowledge I ever thought of.

Thank you so much for sharing this update with us @TravellerG sir.

Thanks for reaching out, dear @TusharSuradkar

Photos

The useful/available PHOTO qualities are (Till 31st May):

  1. Original means all the shots taken in Any Megapixel Camera will be stored AS IT IS.

  2. High quality means: The photos within 16 Megapixel will not be altered & if the photo is taken with a camera/mobile which is above 16 MP sensor, then it will be resized to 16 MP - hope you got my point.

Video

In the same way, the videos above 1080p will be resized to 1080p.

IMPORTANT:

The usual PCs use 2 Megapixel screens (1920 x 1080; let us call this FHD or 2K). So, even if we use 2K size pictures it will give you excellent visual quality in PCs & SUPER (even much better) quality in Mobiles (Mobile screens are small & have fewer pixels).

So in future, if you store your photos in 2K, the file storage size will be very negligible; but will have sufficient quality to view on a PC/Laptop or mobile.

I shall write more about this in the next post.

@Sophia_Cambodia - pls see this response also & if you ask questions, I can include more answers in the next post.
