A Forgotten marvel : Lonad Shiv temple

This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in the heart of Lonad village near Lonad Lake.

It is believed to have been built around the 8th century AD when the northern Konkan region, including Thane, was ruled by the Shilaharas, who were devoted Shiva worshippers.

Unfortunately, due to medieval invasions in the Kalyan-Bhiwandi area, the temple suffered significant damage and has since deteriorated over time.(Ref Image 1)

Despite this, the residents of Lonad continue to perform daily worship at the temple. While most of the outer structure has been destroyed, the inner sanctum (Gabhara-Ref Image 2) remains intact. The local residents of Lonad regularly visit and maintain the temple, ensuring its cleanliness despite the deteriorating structure.

The main sanctum features intricately carved panels on the doorway, possibly depicting Shiva in various postures(Ref Image 3)

Inside, the sanctum houses a Shiva Linga with Nandi in the center and a small Ganesh idol in one corner.

The temple’s base is adorned with elephant carvings, giving the impression that the elephants are supporting the temple(Ref Image 4).

Additionally, there is a carving on the back side of the temple(Ref Image 5).
Despite its age and condition, a few stone carvings of various Hindu deities are still recognizable, offering a glimpse into the artistry of that era.

Another cell contains a broken Shiva Linga & a few carvings on the pillars and doorway. The first panel features a person worshipping a Shiva Linga, with a Gandharva depicted in the middle panel, and a third, unidentified figure. Kirti Mukha is visible below. The door also showcases two standing Apsaras (Ref Image 6)

Given its historical significance, this temple, over 1,500 years old, deserves more attention from the Department of Archaeology or relevant government bodies. The temple remains a prime example of ancient architecture, with its stone carvings standing as a testament to the rich heritage and culture of the time.(Ref Image 7)
Visiting this temple is not just a journey through narrow village roads but also a journey back in time, allowing one to witness the resilience of an ancient monument that still stands despite the ravages of time.

How to Reach Lonad Shiv Mandir?
This temple is located less than 2 kilometers from the Lonad Caves. After reaching the starting point of the caves, ask locals for Lonad Lake. The road to the temple passes through the village, so careful navigation is advised, and assistance from locals may be helpful.
You can also reach Kalyan West and take a direct auto-rickshaw to Lonad Mandir.

Yes, it’s clear from #1

However, #2, due to dim light (humble request: kindly use an editor to ‘Brighten’ such shots - it’s very effective).

The carvings of the temple are very well done even though there is no degree in ancient times.

The temple is very beautiful but needs proper maintenance by the administration.I

Indeed, it should be maintained and reconstructed by the Archeology Department of India.
