On March 2nd, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the majestic Sri Venugopalaswamy Temple near the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Karnataka. This architectural wonder, built in the Hoysala style, stands as a testament to Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage.
History & Relocation
Originally constructed in the 12th century, the Sri Venugopalaswamy Temple was submerged in the backwaters of the KRS reservoir after the dam’s construction in the early 20th century. For decades, the temple remained underwater, visible only when water levels receded.
In a remarkable feat of engineering and devotion, the temple was carefully disassembled and reconstructed stone by stone by the Khoday Foundation in the early 2000s. The restoration process ensured that every detailed carving and structure remained true to its original design, reviving the temple’s historical and spiritual essence.
Set against the backdrop of the serene KRS backwaters, the temple is now a popular pilgrimage site and tourist attraction, offering a peaceful and divine experience. The beautifully sculpted stone chariot, the stunning architecture, and the sanctum dedicated to Lord Venugopala (a form of Krishna) make it a must-visit destination for devotees and history enthusiasts alike.
It’s really a new news for me… shall try next time when I visit KRS… Could you explain how to reach here & the Google Maps Link to this temple, please…
Thanks dear @saidevadiga
Best wishes
