A Decade of Guiding the World to Kenya's Hidden Gems

When I, Edmond Barasa Wanyama, embarked on my journey as a Google Local Guide 10 years ago, little did I know that it would become a deeply rewarding adventure of connecting people with the beauty of Kenya. From bustling cities to serene coastal villages, I’ve been privileged to share the stories of my homeland through the lens of Google Maps.

Over the years, I’ve captured the vibrant streets of Nairobi, mapped the sandy shores of Mombasa, and shed light on lesser-known treasures, like the lush greenery of Kakamega Forest or the cultural richness of Lamu Old Town. Through photos, reviews, and countless edits, I’ve not only helped locals rediscover their neighborhoods but also guided tourists from around the world to places they’d never thought to explore.

One of the most heartwarming moments was when I received a message from a traveler who found their way to a small, family-owned restaurant in my community—all thanks to a review I left. It reminded me of the power of connection and how a simple contribution can make a world of difference.

Being a Local Guide isn’t just about adding photos or reviews; it’s about bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and celebrating the diversity of places and people. As I look back on a decade of contributions, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to spotlight the charm and beauty of Kenya. Here’s to the next 10 years of guiding the world to more incredible places!
