A brief about the Tamil “Puthandu” & Kerala “Vishu” - TravellerG
Puthandu in Tamil Means ‘New Year’ and we greet it with the usage “Puthandu Vazhthukal” = Happy New Year; this is on 14th April 2022. Tamil Hindu Calendar, Saka Samvat 1944, will start on this day.
Mythologically, Tamilians believe that Lord Brahma created the universe on the day of Puthandu.

And…
Vishu (means ‘Equal’) and signifies the ‘spring equinox’ (Equal duration of day & night; this year, Vishu falls on 15th April. Currently, the Malayalam calendar, the Kolla Varsham, 1198 is running. Though the astrological calendar is calculated from Vishu, Kolla Varsham starts as the month of “Chingam” which falls on the 16th or 17th of August, every year.
The famous mythological story is that Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day.
Incidentally, I have published a more detailed post last year about Vishu - ‘Here’.
Both Vishu & Puthandu repeat almost on the same day (April 14/15), every year.
Other parts of India too celebrate the day as “Baisakhi” in central and northern India, “Pohela Sankranti” in Odisha and “Bihu” in Assam, etc.
