A Bowl of Kindness: My Unexpected Marketing Lesson at a Local Noodle Stall

Today, I set out on a simple mission: take some photos and write a review for a small noodle stall in my city. Nothing fancy, just a humble place serving mie ayam at a price so affordable—just Rp 12,000 ($0,74) —that it felt like a hidden gem.

But as I stepped inside, I noticed something that made me pause. On the booth, there was a handwritten sign:

PROMO BULAN INI (PROMOTION OF THE MONTH)

Simple, unpretentious, yet surprisingly effective. It listed four special offers:

  1. Free iced tea, Monday–Friday, with the purchase of “Paket II”
  2. A free bowl of original noodles for birthday guests
  3. A special Monday treat: free noodles for pregnant customers
  4. Friday charity—sharing a meal with those at the mosque

I couldn’t help but smile. This wasn’t just a marketing strategy—it was a masterclass in relationship marketing, wrapped in genuine, local wisdom. No corporate branding, no flashy ads—just thoughtful ways to make people feel special. Who would ever imagined that there would be special promo for pregnant woman at local noodle stall :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It was refreshing to see a small business go beyond just selling food. They weren’t just serving noodles; they were building connections, making moments memorable, and bringing the community closer—one bowl at a time.

This little stall had mastered the art of marketing without even realizing it—and honestly? That’s pretty cool.

Curious about my full review? Check it out on Google Maps:

Hi @yuliastiika thanks for sharing this. I appreciate the fact that you’re inviting others to have a look at your review and asking for feedback. When I clicked on the link it says review is no longer available. Can you confirm that you can still see the review on your Maps profile?

Hi @yuliastiika

I noticed that you have uploaded

362 reviews but only

293 of them are currently public.

This might explain why @iyudhi can’t see the review discussed here.

Hello @yuliastiika,
same as @iyudhi, I appreciate your great description and observation, but can’t see your review neither. As @MortenCopenhagen suggests, I also believe, the review and/or one or more of the attached photos didn’t pass the the SPAM filter. Some suggestions:

  • Before sharing a link here on Connect (or sending to other people), I paste it into an anonymous (aka private) browser session, without logging into Google to make sure, it is public and can be seen by other users.
  • In addition, after posting any photos or videos to a pin, I open the listing and watch whether they appear under the “Recent” and “By you” tab. This can take only some minutes, but in some cases almost a day, as it happened to me just a week ago.
  • One you understood, review with attached photos/video is not public within a couple of days, I recommend to remove all those media and see if text-only is accepted. Is so, you might either add the photos one by one, checking again each time before adding the next or add all media directly to the listing (my preferred way).

Hello everyone, well I am very grateful for all the responses @iyudhi @MortenCopenhagen @WilfriedB
I am having a hard time finding the reason why my review is not showing up, because I just wrote the review this morning. I have tried checking the link in other browsers and it really doesn’t show up.
I will try to check the link again in the next few days. For this reason, do I need to delete my post on Google Connect?

It was also quite sad when I found out that out of the 362 reviews I made only 293 appeared. Even though my reviews are often quite long and complete with photos and videos
Could you please tell me the steps so that I know which reviews are not displayed?

Hello @yuliastiika

The more photos and videos you attached to the review, the longer the SPAM filter might need. Specially for videos, it can take a day or more.

I don’t think this is necessary, nor makes sense. Just observe, whether your review is public and remove photos and videos, if it takes too long.

What a heartwarming and insightful post. @yuliastiika
You beautifully captured how a simple noodle stall can teach such profound lessons in kindness, community, and marketing. The thoughtful promotions—especially the one for pregnant women and the Friday charity meal—are truly touching and reflect deep cultural empathy. Your post is not just a review—it’s a reminder that genuine connection often trumps any corporate campaign.

Have you ever come across another small business that surprised you with such heartfelt, people-first initiatives?
