A Beacon of History: My Day at the Old Port Said Lighthouse in Egypt

In 2021, driven by a thirst for discovery, I ventured to Port Said, Egypt, with a fellow traveler. Our goal was singular: to explore the majestic Old Port Said Lighthouse, an emblem of historical significance and architectural marvel at the entrance of the Suez Canal.

Also known as the Port Said Signal Tower, this historic lighthouse, constructed in the late 19th century, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and foresight of its era. Designed by the renowned French architect François Coignet, the lighthouse cuts an impressive figure against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea and the bustling city.

Rising to a towering height of 56 meters (183 feet), the structure’s unique blend of brick and iron construction was revolutionary at the time. This blend not only provided the lighthouse with its distinctive appearance but also contributed to its enduring strength and resilience. As we stood at its base, craning our necks to see the top, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of awe at its grandeur.

The lighthouse’s beacon, now silent, once cast light up to 30 nautical miles (56 kilometers) away, guiding ships safely through the Suez Canal’s waters. Though it no longer serves its original purpose, the lighthouse still stands as a proud guardian of history, its light a symbol of guidance through the ages.

Gazing out over the city and the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, I felt a profound connection to the generations of sailors and adventurers who had been guided by this very beacon.

The lighthouse is also home to a charming museum, a treasure trove of historical artifacts that narrate the story of the Suez Canal and the lighthouse itself. Each exhibit, from old maritime tools to photographs, told a story of innovation, adventure, and the human spirit. Walking through the museum, I felt as if I were walking through the pages of history, each artifact a chapter in the story of this remarkable place.

As our day in Port Said drew to a close, I reflected on the experience of visiting the Old Port Said Lighthouse. It’s more than just a structure; it’s a symbol of human achievement, a beacon of maritime history, and an architectural wonder. This lighthouse, perched at the edge of one of the world’s most significant waterways, is not just a part of Port Said’s history; it’s a chapter in the story of global trade and exploration.

For anyone with a passion for maritime history or an appreciation for stunning vistas, a visit to the Old Port Said Lighthouse is a journey into the heart of Egypt’s rich cultural and historical heritage. As I left, I carried with me not just photographs and memories but a deeper understanding of the indelible mark this lighthouse has left on the world.

@NunungAfuah Yeah Egypt is full of rich culture, whenever I visit any new city I try to visit old places to write posts about them   .

This lighthouse resembles the minaret of a mosque or a tomb but has proven to be useful to ships far away in the sea.

Do they allow climbing up to the top @Mo_TravelleerX .
