KOLKATA HERITAGE SERIES - PART 1 - MARBLE PALACE
Marble Palace is renowned for its neoclassical architecture, marble floors, and eclectic collection of Western sculptures and Victorian furniture.
The location is worthwhile, and the structure and its contents are both pleasant. Additionally, there is a small zoo on the royal grounds. Mahatma Gandhi Road metro station is a short stroll from the area.
The guard informed me upon entering that he and the guide must offer a “donation” and that 100 rupees is insufficient; instead, 200 or 300 rupees are required.
The palace tour was quite hurried; I felt like I was being hurried through it. It was over in ten minutes. After giving the guide 100 rupees, he claimed to require 200, but I didn’t pay him.
Parking may be challenging because the location is in a lane. The privately run museum is filled with incredibly beautiful artifacts, especially marble statues of Greek gods and goddesses. It’s wonderful to look at and enjoy the collection. Entry is free. However, the collection—which is quite valuable—needs to be kept in a clean environment with enough lighting. The security guards at the house’s gate and entry need to be greatly enhanced.
The experience date was February 2025.
