9 million views on a single photograph

Hi everyone, I hope your week is off to a great start!

I was recently looking through my Google Maps profile when I noticed something surprising: one of my photographs has received more than 9 million views.

That is far ahead of my second- and third-most-viewed photographs, which have around 2 million and 1.5 million views respectively.

What makes this even more curious is the subject of the photograph. It is a photo of an archaeological museum in a city in northern Spain. By comparison, the other two photographs were taken at Singapore’s national zoo and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, both major destinations that receive large numbers of visitors.

It made me wonder: what caused this particular photograph to reach so many people?

Was it featured prominently on Google Maps? Was there limited photographic content available for the museum? Did interest in the museum or city suddenly increase? Or did the algorithm simply continue recommending it once it began receiving attention?

Nine million views later, I am still curious. What do you think might explain it?
